JUNE 2017 ◆ 29 As summer 2017 approaches, new NCAA legislation and an NCAA waiver was granted that changes how your 2017 Virginia football team prepares for William and Mary on September 2, 2017. The highlights of the legislation and waiver are below. First, the team will begin practicing on July 28, 2017, more than one week earlier than in previous years. The reason for this earlier practice is that "two-a-day" practices were eliminated. The team may start preseason football practice up to seven days earlier, even if they do not need all seven days to complete the NCAA permitted 29 on-field practices. The waiver empowers institutions to deter- mine how many days within the seven are necessary to adhere to the guidelines, while weighing costs and impacts on student-athlete time demands. Instead, the team may have one, three-hour practice and one, one-hour walk-through for the first five days of practice called the five-day acclimatization period and one three-hour practice and a walk-through on practice days thereafter. Unlike the walk-throughs during the acclimatization period, a football may be used during a walk-through post-acclimatization period. Further, football student- athletes must receive three-hours of continuous rest between a practice and a walk-through; however, time spent in team meetings, film review, receiving medical treatment and eat- ing meals may be included as part of the recovery time. In addition to these changes and the required summer workouts in which the team will engage with the strength and conditioning staff, the 2017 Cavaliers' team will be eagerly awaiting William and Mary's arrival at Scott Stadium.
