selves. I'm a very competitive person, and we all are — we want to win, but more importantly we want to grow, we want to get better and keep our confidence." The longtime coach has already seen great strides made by his team. He noted the squad bounced back from those early-season losses, especially on the defensive end, which will be crucial later in the season. He has received excel- lent leadership from his lone fourth-year, All-ACC forward Will Bates, who leads the team with four goals and nine points. Second-year goalie Spencer LaCivita, who played every minute between the pipes in 2011, has also stepped up in a big way. "Against Mount St. Mary's, I consistently heard him barking out orders — being a real leader back there, feeling confident about what he was saying," the coach noted. "It was loud, it was pur- poseful, it was confident and the players listened to him. He's growing in that regard, and along with the experience that he's getting, he's going to be a great goalkeeper." With such a promising core of young players, which also includes rookies Darius Madison (for- ward), Todd Wharton (midfielder), Brian James (midfielder), Scott Thomsen (midfielder/defender) and Marcus Salandy-Defour (forward/midfielder), along with a host of talented second-years, it's hard not to think about how dangerous the Wa- hoos will be down the road. However, Gelnovatch sees no reason to wait for a couple of years to see what his team can do. "We know we can think about next year and the year after, and say that we're going to be a College Cup team, but I have challenged them to go after it this year," he said. "I've challenged them and said we don't want to lose another game in Klöckner. We have 10 games left at home, and we don't want to lose one. I've told them, 'Let's not wait for next year; let's do it this year.' The challenge is out there and, when I look into their eyes, I can see that they're up for it. "I want our goals to be realistic. I don't want the goals to be off the charts like they are some years, but depending on how well we are doing, I don't want to underachieve, either. "Little by little, we're going to put goals on their plates, and right now, the goal is not to lose a game in Klöckner the rest of the season." ◆ A tradition of taking care of Cavaliers and their families both on and off of the field.
