Jamoris Slaughter Sidelined For Rest of 2012 Fifth-year senior safety Jamoris Slaughter underwent successful surgery Sept. 19, performed by team physician Dr. Brian Ratigan, on his ruptured left Achilles tendon suffered midway through the Michigan State game four days earlier. Slaughter is expected to make a full recovery in six months. If Slaughter is going to petition the NCAA for a sixth year of eligibility, he would need to provide medical documentation that he missed two full seasons because of injury and/or special circumstances. Slaughter was withheld from action as a freshman in 2008 to preserve a fifth year of eligibility in 2012. Last year, two Notre Dame men’s basketball players applied for a sixth season. The NCAA granted one to Scott Martin because he missed one full season with an injury and another to attend to family matters that included an ill father. Tim Abromaitis did not receive a sixth season because even though he missed the majority of last season with a knee injury, he did not have any previous campaign where he was sidelined with an injury. In other football news during the preparation for Michigan State: • Head coach Brian Kelly described sophomore safety Matthias Farley, who slid into Slaughter’s starting position, as “sneaky fast.” In just three games of “limited” playing time, he’s amassed roughly 140 snaps, according to Kelly. • Fifth-year senior Kapron Lewis-Moore and freshman Sheldon Day both were a little banged up at defensive end after two physical football games against Purdue and Michigan State, but were projected to play against Michigan. Lewis-Moore’s calf injury in particular was placed “at that line of being hurt and being injured,” according to Kelly. • Sophomore Chase Hounshell missed the trip to East Lansing and had yet to play in the first three games. Kelly said the 6-4, 275-pound defensive end has been dealing with a shoulder injury but was available if needed against Michigan. • Sophomore wideout DaVaris Daniels was expected to play against Michigan after seeing a very limited role against Michigan State. Daniels aggravated an ankle injury the day before the MSU contest. • Freshman Elijah Shumate, who excelled as the nickel back through the first three games, will be more involved at the normal cornerback position in the future. Kelly said he expects Shumate to get a lot of work there during the bye week and moving forward from that point. • Sophomore offensive tackle Tate Nichols returned to practice during Michigan week. A knee injury in August sidelined him the first three games.
