T H E M A I N E V E N T FOOTBALL LIFT FOR LIFE 1 1 A . M . | J U L Y 1 5 | H O L U B A H A L L | B T N For most of Penn State's athletic teams, the summer is a time for quiet behind-the- scenes preparation. That's true of the football team, too, but the Nittany Lions will be making one public appearance before the start of the regular season in September, and it's a signi6cant one: Li8 for Life. Organized by Penn State's chapter of Upli8ing Ath- letes, the 15th edition of this annual fundraiser will feature players performing an array of strength and endurance competitions to raise money for the 6ght against rare dis- eases. Set to coincide with the Arts Festival, Li8 for Life will pit o7ensive players against their defensive counterparts in an obstacle course, sand bag stack, sled pull and push, shuttle run and tug of war. Last year's event raised $73,000, bringing the Penn State chapter's 14-year total to nearly $1.2 million. This year's e7orts are being directed by co-presidents Trace McSorley and Jason Cabinda, vice president Andrew Nelson, treasurer Tom Devenney and secretary Ryan Bates. More than 80 players are expected to take part, and there will be an autograph session a8erward, along with a kids football clinic from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. The cost of the clinic is $15 per child, and there is a sug- gested donation of $10 for adults and $5 for children for those who plan to be in Holuba Hall for one of the team's biggest philanthropic e7orts of the year. – M.H. We are not a block-first operation. We are a return-first operation that has the ability to create pressure when needed. Some teams, they're coming after the block because that's who they are. We think we have enough athletes that we can do what the situation allows us to do. Each week, we're going to have a block, and we know when we can call it. Each week, we're going to have a re- turn, and we know when we can call it. It's going to be predicated on the game plan. What you don't want is, you go for the block, you rough the punter and then they get the ball back. So you've got to know what's going on. I know how a lot of people in the stands feel. When we block it, it works out great, but when we don't, of course not. So you've got to be in the right situation, and to me it's: How is the offense playing? How is the defense playing? What's the flow of the game? Our goal on special teams is to create and maintain momentum, not to ever ex- change or take it away. We want to create momentum for ourselves, and we want to maintain any momentum that we've got. Sometimes we may have a block and never call it. Some- times we may have three blocks and we may call all three. So it varies. We're always prepared, but we also go with the flow of the game. BWI What does it mean to have Blake Gillikin's consistent presence in the punting game? HUFF It takes stress off everybody else. It takes stress off the defense, it takes stress off the offense. It took stress off of Tyler, because Blake was so good at pinning teams inside the 5 or the 10 that he didn't have to try a 55-yard field goal. So it takes pressure off of everybody. The more consis- tent we can play on special teams, the more pressure we relieve. And to me, the more consistent you play, the more big plays you have. ■ HUFF CONTINUED FROM PAGE 72
