Their ap- pearance in the sparkling new Kelly green jerseys electrifies them, Notre Dame Stadium and ABC- TV's national television audience. Rice was thrust into his new role a week earlier when senior starter Terry Andrysiak breaks his clavicle while the Irish fall behind 27-0 at Pitt. Rice nearly rallied the Irish in the 30-22 defeat. The option-oriented Rice carries nine times for 70 yards and two touchdowns against the Falcons while directing a 354-yard rushing attack. He com- pletes only 1 of 5 pass attempts for 10 yards with an interception.
