GAINING ALTITUDE
After some early turbulence, Penn State soars past Rutgers
People tend to bring up the lopsided history when
talk turns to the Penn State-Rutgers series, but all
James Franklin wanted this week was to go 1-0
against the Scarlet Knights.
He got his victory. Coming off of back-to-back
losses to Ohio State and Michigan State, the Nit-
tany Lions didn't indulge in any big-picture think-
ing. Instead, they zeroed in on Rutgers, and their
focused approach – along with their generally su-
perior recruiting – paid off. A?er a shaky first
quarter in which the upstart Knights pushed them
around on both sides of the ball, the Lions put the
hammer down and pulled away for a 35-6 victory
on Homecoming.
