14 THE WOLVERINE DECEMBER 2017   INSIDE MICHIGAN ATHLETICS MICHIGAN'S TOP PERFORMERS Women's basketball senior guard Katelynn Flaherty: On Nov. 6, she was named to the Nancy Lieberman Award watch list for a sec- ond straight season, which is given annually to the nation's top point guard. The Point Pleasant, N.J., native was one of just 20 players tabbed to the list. Flaherty headed into her se- nior season with 2,019 career points, just 57 points away from tying all-time leader Diane Dietz (2,076 from 1978-82). After scoring 49 points in the season's first two games, she was just nine points away from standing alone atop the record books. Women's swimming and diving junior Siobhán Haughey: She earned Big Ten Co-Swimmer of the Week honors Oct. 25, already marking the third time she achieved that this season, after being a key contribu- tor in Michigan's 200-127 victory over then-No. 9 Louisville Oct. 21. She won the 200-yard freestyle with an NCAA "A" time and pool record (1:44.58), and she also won the 100-yard freestyle with an NCAA "B" time to go along with yet another pool record (48.23). Ice hockey freshman forward Josh Norris: He helped lead Michigan to a 4-1 victory over Vermont Oct. 20 in the Wolverines' home opener. He scored his first career goal at the 4:20 mark of the third period, extending the Maize and Blue's lead to 3-0. He tallied another goal just two minutes and 20 seconds later, becoming the first U-M fresh- man to score two goals in his home debut since Kyle Connor in 2015. Field hockey senior midfielder/backer Katie Trombetta: She was named the Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week Oct. 23 and the Longstreth/ NFHCA Division I Defensive Player of the Week just two days later af- ter helping lead the Wolverines to three consecutive victories over No. 8 Northwestern Oct. 20, No. 7 Louisville Oct. 22 and Central Michigan Oct. 24. She tallied the lone goal in U-M's 1-0 victory against the Wildcats, and compiled three assists in back-to-back games against the Cardinals and Chippewas. Men's swimming and diving freshman Ricardo Vargas: The distance specialist was named Big Ten Freshman of the Week Oct. 25 after an impressive performance against then-No. 7 Louisville Oct. 21. In his Wolverine debut, he won the 1,000- yard freestyle (8:58.22), finished third in the 500-yard freestyle (4:24.08) and came in fifth in the 200-yard butterfly (1:50.72). His efforts helped guide the Maize and Blue to a 230-119 victory over the Cardinals. — Austin Fox MAIZE AND BLUE NOTEBOOK MICHIGAN'S ICE HOCKEY TEAM ELECTS TEAM CAPTAIN AND ALTERNATES On Oct. 19, senior forward Tony Calderone was elected team captain, while senior defenseman Sam Piazza was chosen to serve as an alter- nate captain alongside junior defenseman Joseph Cecconi, sophomore forward Jake Slaker and sophomore defenseman Griffin Luce. With the election, Calderone becomes the 98th captain in U-M's his- tory. The senior led the team in scoring last season, tallying 15 goals and three assists to go along with a team-high five power-play goals. He was also named to last year's Academic All-Big Ten squad for his success in the classroom. Piazza was an All-Big Ten honorable mention last season, leading all U-M defensemen with 14 points in 32 games. He also served as an as- sistant captain for the second half of last year. Cecconi racked up a career-high eight points last season (one goal and seven assists) and was awarded the Vic Heyliger Award as Michi- gan's most outstanding defenseman. Slaker led the Wolverines with 21 points in his debut campaign a year ago (seven goals and 14 assists), while Luce appeared in 27 games and served as an alternate captain for the U.S. National Team Development Program in Plymouth, Mich., prior to his arrival in Ann Arbor.
