50 THE WOLVERINE DECEMBER 2017 BY BRANDON BROWN A s of mid-November, Michigan had 15 commits in the 2018 class with room for five to eight more based on potential attrition and how many players with a fifth year of eli- gibility return for next season. A couple of Michigan's targets have chosen other schools, and that has resulted in several late-cycle of- fers going out to current high school seniors. The Wolverine staff extended seven scholarship offers to 2018 pros- pects in the month of October, more than June, July, August and Septem- ber combined. Below is the list of who is getting a relatively late look from the Wolverine staff. Metairie (La.) Rummel four-star wide receiver Ja'Marr Chase Chase — Rivals,com's No. 10 wide receiver and No. 50 overall prospect nation- ally — was a Florida commitment, but the firing of Jim McElwain shook up his recruit- ment, and he decom- mitted Nov. 8. At 6-2, 185 pounds and with a lofty ranking, Chase would be a huge pull for U-M considering the lateness of the offer. Many believe that Chase will now end up at LSU or TCU, but Michigan is hoping to at least get him on campus. "I'm just focused on my season," Chase said. "After my season is over, I'll worry about my recruitment. I told the Michigan coaches that I would want to take an official visit after my season is over, too." It'll be very interesting to see which postseason official visits Chase ends up taking. Eureka (Mo.) High two-star run- ning back Hassan Haskins The 6-1, 207-pound Haskins re- ceived an in-school visit from running backs coach Jay Harbaugh dur- ing U-M's bye week, and that resulted in an offer. A couple of weeks later, Haskins was in Ann Ar- bor for an official visit for the Rutgers game. Now, he's a part of the class. He's expected to get a bump in the rankings and will likely pick up his third star sometime in late November or early December. San Marcos (Calif.) Mission Hills three-star wide receiver Chris Olave The speedy Olave had to sit out his junior year due to transfer rules, and that played a big part in his late-cycle offer from the Wolverines. The 6-1, 170-pounder is very intrigued by Michigan and plans to take an official visit to Ann Arbor after the season is over. Ohio State and Utah are the only other programs that will definitely get an official visit with USC being very likely. His fifth and final official visit will remain open for a while un- til he pares things down a bit more. Blairstown (N.J.) Blair Academy four-star strongside defensive end Jayson Oweh Whenever Michigan gets involved with a prospect from New Jersey, everyone seems to pay attention. That's exactly where things stand between the Wolverines and the 6-5, 240-pound Oweh. Rivals.com's No. 9 strongside defensive end and No. 179 over- all player in the nation was originally planning to officially visit Florida Nov. 24. He has can- celled that trip in order to check out Michigan for the Ohio State game. It looks like the Wolverines will have a real shot at landing Oweh, but will battle Ohio State, Penn State and perhaps the Gators for his signature. "Michigan is definitely really high for me now — a game changer," Oweh said. "Michigan is what my family and I are looking for in a school; strong on both spectrums — athletics and academics. I'm looking forward to visiting to learn more." Mission Viejo (Calif.) High three- star offensive tackle Jarrett Patterson At 6-5, 275 pounds, Patterson looks great at tackle and can also play guard. The Arizona State commit may very well end up at Michigan based on his reaction to picking up the offer from U-M. "The Michigan offer is huge," Pat- terson said. "I was really fired up to get it. Playing in front of more than 100,000 would be a dream come true. The tradition there is great and they have produced a lot of NFL talent.
