UNDER THE DOME Anniversaries In Notre Dame Athletics History: Oct. 24-30 90 Years Ago: Nov. 4, 1922 Senior halfback Paul Castner puts on one of the greatest all-around — offense, defense and special teams — individual performances in Notre Dame history. In front of a capacity audience of 22,000 at Cartier Field versus Indiana University, Castner: • Romps for a 23-yard touch- down in the second quarter and then kicks the extra point to give the Irish a 7-0 halftime lead against the Hoosiers. • Rushes for a seven-yard touchdown before adding the PAT, and later in the third quar- ter drop-kicks a 45-yard field goal. • For the coup de grace, Cast- ner drills a 30-yard field goal and seals the verdict with a 35-yard interception return for a touch- down in the fourth quarter. Castner scores three touch- downs (one on defense), kicks all three point after tries and adds two drop-kick field goals to tally all the points in the 27-0 Irish victory. The only other time a Notre Dame player would score all the team points — minimum 20 — in victory would be 1956 Heis- man Trophy winner Paul Hor- nung during a 21-14 victory that season against North Carolina. Senior halfback Paul Castner scored three touchdowns (one on defense), kicked all three point after tries and added two drop- kick field goals to tally all the points in a 27-0 win over Indiana in 1922.
