T H E M A I N E V E N T MEN'S BASKETBALL WISCONSIN @ PENN STATE 7 P . M . | D E C . 4 | B R Y C E J O R D A N C E N T E R | E S P N 2 | The Big Ten season begins a bit earlier than usual this year. Instead of opening their conference slate in late December, the Nittany Lions and their Big Ten bretheren will play two league games during the 8rst week of the month. Penn State will open its con- ference schedule with a visit to Iowa on Dec. 2, then will return home to welcome the Badgers two days later. The early start (and the quick turnaround) are a result of the Big Ten's decision to hold its postseason tournament in New York. League o:cials wanted to stage the event at Madison Square Garden, but it had already been booked by the Big East on the dates that the Big Ten wanted for its tourney. If they were going to have their main event in the city's most famous basketball venue, they were going to need to hold it one week earlier than usual. "We polled our coaches at the time, and they all felt it was worth the challenges in the schedule to have the opportunity to move our tour- nament to Madison Square Garden," Big Ten senior associate commissioner Mark Rudner told Landof10.com. "So we did that." As far as the Lions are concerned, the change means they will get to play one of their bigger home games of the season before the students leave for their holiday break. That's a nice perk for a Penn State team that will need all the help it can get to slow down Ethan Happ and company. – M.H.
