14 CAVALIER CORNER "The foundation is there to continue to do that and also improve and do better in other sports as well." Cavalier Corner: What are your primary objectives over the next six to 12 months? Williams: "I'll take some time to try and understand the University, the athletic de- partment, get an understanding of the roles our different staff play, understand our coaches, our student-athletes and our donors. Then I'll begin to evaluate and figure out how I can enhance what we already do well and identify some areas where I can help us do better. Those will be my first goals, to try and understand the environment." Cavalier Corner: Who are some of your mentors and how have they impacted you and your career? Williams: "I would say that I like to learn and that includes learning how to do things well and learning from mistakes that either I have made or that others have made. I think that I've learned from every athletic director that I've worked with and there have been several through the years. Several of them I still communicate with today. "My biggest mentor or most impactful mentor is my college coach, Andy Landers. I speak with him on a regular basis. A lot of the fundamentals that student-athletes learn from mentors in any regard, I picked up along the way from Coach Landers. "Time management, organization, dili- gence, hard work, attention to detail, caring about people, planning, being prepared — all those are things that I think have helped me throughout my career." When asked about what appealed to her about UVA, Williams said: "It's very important to me that student-athletes have an opportunity to be a part of the uni- versity community, a part of the community at large, while they are pursuing their academic goals and their athletic goals. Virginia is an ideal place for that." PHOTO BY MATT RILEY/COURTESY UVA
