20 CAVALIER CORNER BY GREG WATERS W ITH BRIAN BOLAND at the helm, the Univer- sity of Virginia's men's tennis team captured 11 ACC Tournament cham- pionships, 13 ACC regular-season titles and three of the last four NCAA crowns. In addition, UVA won 140 straight matches against ACC foes — the longest streak of this nature in league history in any sport. The person tasked with filling those rather large tennis shoes is Andres Pedroso, who on May 24 was appointed director of tennis, which gives him oversight of both teams, plus the head men's coach. The obvious question is: What can Pe- droso do for an encore? "If I had a dollar for every time anybody asked me that, I'd be a rich man," Pedroso said with a chuckle. "This program always has been about developing world-class people, teaching character and developing great people who are going to be great team- mates and now [parents]. This has been more about developing human beings than tennis players. Pedroso served as Virginia's associate head coach from 2010-14, when the Cavaliers won four ACC titles, the program's first NCAA championship (2013) and two ITA National Team Indoor crowns.
