14 FEBRUARY 2018 BLUE & GOLD ILLUSTRATED UNDER THE DOME Irish student-athletes excelling on the field and in the classroom Cal Burke — Hockey The sophomore forward from Boxborough, Mass., was named the Big Ten's Third Star of the Week after record- ing a hat trick in Notre Dame's 6-2 victory at Wis- consin Dec. 9. The win gave the Irish a sweep of their two-game series with the Badgers. The hat trick was the first of Burke's career and the first for Notre Dame since October 2015. Through 20 games, Burke led the Irish in goals with 12. Jake Evans — Hockey The senior from Toronto, Ontario, was selected as a member of Team Canada's roster for the Spengler Cup, a worldwide hockey tournament that be- gan in 1923. This year's edi- tion was held Dec. 26-31 in Davos, Switzerland. Evans helped Notre Dame get off to its stellar start (16-3-1 overall, 10-0-0 Big Ten) by posting an NCAA-leading 28 points (seven goals and 21 assists). Jessica Shepard — Basketball The junior from Fremont, Neb., set a Notre Dame home game record with 39 points in a 91-82 victory over DePaul Dec. 17. She also grabbed 11 rebounds to record her fourth double-double of the year and was named the ACC Player of the Week for the first time in her career. T h r o u g h 1 4 g a m e s , Shepard was the team's top rebounder (8.6 boards per contest) and ranked second in scor- ing (15.2 points per contest). Kathryn Westbeld — Basketball The senior from Kettering, Ohio, helped Notre Dame to a 91-85 overtime victory over Marquette Dec. 20. After making the game-tying jumper to send it to over- time, she added four points in the extra period. Westbeld finished with a season-high 13 points and 10 rebounds for her first double-double of the season. During Notre Dame's 13-1 start, she averaged 6.9 points and 5.2 rebounds in 22.8 minutes per game. TOP OF THE CLASS ✦ GIMME FIVE With Notre Dame's 68-59 win versus Georgia Tech Dec. 30, 18th-year head coach Mike Brey equaled Digger Phelps — whose 20-year reign lasted from 1971-91 — for the most victories in program history. Blue & Gold Illustrated went to press the day before the Jan. 3 game at home versus North Carolina State in which Brey could move into the top spot on his own. The records of Brey and Phelps are virtually identical, but another 20-year head coach at Notre Dame, George Keogan (1923-43), easily is tops with the best winning percentage. En- shrined in the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame while helping lead Notre Dame to the 1927 and 1936 Helms Foundation national titles, Keogan was hired by football coach/athletics director Knute Rockne. Like Rockne, Keogan died in of- fice at age 52 on Feb. 17, 1943, from a massive heart attack not long after a practice with the team. CHARTING THE IRISH NOTRE DAME MEN'S BASKETBALL IN THE ACC Notre Dame posted a 6-12 league record in its debut season in the ACC in 2013-14, but has since enjoyed plenty of success in what is considered the toughest conference in college basketball. Over the past three seasons, the Irish have compiled a 37-17 mark (.685 winning per- centage) against ACC foes while taking home the 2015 conference tournament title. The only other programs to win the ACC Tournament since Notre Dame joined the league are the three who have a better league record since 2013-14 — Vir- ginia, North Carolina and Duke. The Cav- aliers and Tar Heels have both claimed two regular-season titles as well. The Irish rank fourth behind the three aforementioned programs in league winning percentage (.597) over the last four seasons. The Irish fall to fifth when you include Louisville's mark during the past three campaigns. (The Cardinals did not join the conference until the 2014-15 season.) Moving? Let us know!
