changing television contract with NBC with a new spin on the school's fight song. The deal ruffled feathers, but worked out pretty well in the long run. Maybe a little jeering is exactly what J eer, Jeer for old Notre Dame. Sports Illustrated started its 1990 article about Notre Dame's game- Bringing The Road Home MURPHY'S LAW DAN MURPHY the Irish need now as well. Cheering doesn't seem to be having a strong effect. Notre Dame has a matching 5-0 re- cord at home and on the road this sea- son. The similarities stop there. The average margin of victory in those wins away from South Bend was 28 points, heading into the Boston Col- lege game. Despite playing less intimidat- ing teams, the Irish have yet to win by more than a touchdown at home. Twice they needed overtime, and three times they have trailed after the first half. On the road, Notre Dame has been behind on the scoreboard for a grand total of 41 seconds. Brian Kelly's team looks less com- fortable at home. Ten of its 11 turn- overs in the first nine games came at Notre Dame Stadium. The only one that didn't was an interception on their ancestral turf in Dublin's Aviva Stadium. Only 15 of the team's 48 pen- alties have come in front of loud, hos- tile away crowds. "It's been educational for me," Kelly said about his battles at home.
