snapshot THE ACADEMIC HEISMAN Fourth-year linebacker Micah Kiser was named the 2017 William V. Campbell Trophy winner by the National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame Dec. 5. The award recognizes an individual as the best football scholar-athlete in the nation, from a nationwide pool that included all NCAA divisions and the NAIA. Kiser, one of 13 finalists, received the award at the NFF Annual Awards Dinner in New York City. Kiser, who received a $25,000 postgraduate scholarship as the winner of the Campbell Trophy, graduated with a degree in foreign affairs (3.42 GPA) in May 2017 and had a 4.0 GPA while pursing a master's degree in higher education at the time of the award announcement. The Baltimore native was tabbed as a first-team All-ACC selection for the third consecutive year after becoming just the second player to lead the league in tack- les (145 in 2017) three straight seasons (Boston College's Luke Kuechly did it from 2009-11). He also finished sixth nationally with an average of 11.2 stops per contest. He is UVA's second Campbell Trophy winner. Former Cavalier Tom Burns won the Campbell Trophy in 1993, the fourth year it was awarded. Duke and Virginia are the only ACC schools to boast a Campbell Trophy winner while members of the league. UVA is now one of five schools with multiple Campbell Trophy winners, joining Florida (three), Ohio State (two), Tennessee (two) and Texas (two). PHOTO COURTESY UVA
