FEBRUARY 2018 29 Military Bowl 2017 On December 28, Virginia Football participated in the 10 th anniversary of the Military Bowl, UVA's first bowl game since 2011. There were thousands of Virginia fans in Annapolis, Md. to support the Hoos. Alumni, donors and fans braved the cold in Annapolis to experience some bowl game fun that included a Wahoo Welcome party, Military Bowl parade and other festivities. Prior to the game, the Virginia Athletics Founda- tion and the University Advancement Office of Engagement co-hosted a Cavalier Countdown Tailgate for almost 1,000 fans who gathered inside a heated tent to enjoy a tasty BBQ menu, hot beverages and game day giveaways. The UVA tailgate was part of the Military Bowl's Tail- gate festivities with live music, face-painting, a photo booth and food vendors. As guests prepared to leave the tailgate for the game, the UVA band, cheerleaders and Cav Man surprised everyone by joining the party and leading the crowd in a few school-spirited songs and chants. Dirk Katstra, executive direc- tor of the VAF, and Mark Luellen, vice president for advancement, welcomed the crowd and an- nounced raffle winners of a signed football and book by Bronco Mendenhall, signed picture by Micah Kiser and signed basketball by Tony Ben- nett. President Sullivan addressed the crowd and introduced Carla Williams, the new director of athletics. The tailgate marked Williams' first official athletics speaking event, and at the con- clusion of her speech, she and president Sullivan along with the band led the crowd in the Good Old Song. It was great to see so many Hoos gath- ered together to support Virginia Football and the athletics program. Many Wahoo fans crossing all generations partic- ipated in the tailgate and Good Old Song send- off led by Carla Williams and Teresa Sullivan. With the upcoming Super Bowl and Conference and NCAA Basketball Tournaments taking place in February, March and April, did you know that the NCAA membership has adopted specific rules prohibiting athletics department staff members and student-athletes from engaging in gambling activities on intercollegiate, amateur, and profes- sional sports in which the NCAA conducts championships (e.g., football, basketball, etc.)? The NCAA's motto for this gambling prohibition is "Don't Bet on It." NCAA member colleges and universities, including UVA, have defined sports wagering as putting something of value at risk (such as an entry fee) with the opportunity to win something in return. Because of this, student- athletes, coaches and administrators may not participate in competitions (e.g., pick-em's, office pools, brackets, etc.) where there is both a required entry fee and an op- portunity to win a prize. Both athletics department staff members and student-athletes are educated on this from the Compliance Office throughout the year. Sports wagering can be a serious crime that threatens the well-being of student-athletes and the integrity of the game. Student-athletes who gamble are breaking the NCAA bylaws and jeopardizing their eligibility. The NCAA believes sports should be appreciated for the benefits of participating or watching, and not be influenced by the amount of money that can be won (or lost) depending on the outcome of the games. We encourage UVA fans to enjoy watching the Super Bowl, ACC and the NCAA Tournament games and filling out a bracket just for the fun of it, not because of the amount of money you could possibly win. As a result, please help UVA's Athletics Compliance Office and "Don't Bet on It."
