cavalier sports FEBRUARY 2018 9 this month in uva history 3 Straight National Player of the Year honors won by fourth-year Tara Vittese, making her the first-ever field hockey player to achieve that feat. The four- time first-team All-American finished second nationally in goals (1.25) and points per game (3.2) this past fall. The midfielder ended her career with 195 points and 51 assists, totals that both rank third in the UVA record books. Feb. 1, 1955 Bill Miller posts the first triple-double in school history during a 98-91 loss to No. 6 NC State by the unranked Cavaliers. He recorded 11 points, 10 re- bounds and 10 assists, and remains the only player other than legendary center Ralph Sampson, who had two, to post a triple-double in UVA history. Feb. 8, 1989 First-year point guard DAWN STALEY poured in 37 points during a 94-76 win at Wake Forest to set the school's rookie scoring record. It is the fourth-highest scoring game in program history, regard- less of class. Staley, who went on to be a two-time National Player of the Year and Hall of Fame player and coach, finished her rookie year leading the team in scoring, with a career-best 18.5 per game. That average from her first season ranks sixth all time among Cavaliers. 18 Future Wahoos signed with the football team during the first-ever early signing period for football Dec. 20-22. Four enrolled early, including quarterback Brennan Armstrong, who is listed as a four-star recruit by ESPN. Virginia defensive tackle Andrew Brown may see his stock rise more than anyone after this week in Mobile. Being allowed to play a more attacking position on the inside as opposed to the two-gap spot he manned on the edge for the Cavaliers, the former five-star recruit has been freed to show off his electric first step and burst into the backfield. He is continually disrupting plays behind the line of scrimmage. It didn't matter which offensive lineman he faced." — CBS Sports' Chris Trapasso on the former Virginia defensive lineman who was one of four Cavaliers to take part in the Senior Bowl Jan. 27 7th Was where former UVA women's golfer Lauren Coughlin, the 2016 ACC indi- vidual champion, finished in the LPGA's annual Qualifying School in December, earning her a 2018 LPGA Tour card. She will be the second Cav on tour, joining Brittany Altomare. It's a good sign for sure, but as everyone will tell you it's one conference game in the middle part of the year, so you don't want to make too much of it. But this is a special environment as it always is here, and you do have to have some poise and toughness in this setting. … They're a team that's a joy to coach because they're pretty clear on who they are and it doesn't matter who's getting the shot or who's doing what. I hope that will remain." — UVA head coach Tony Bennett after his team moved to 20‑1 with a 65‑63 win over No. 4 Duke Jan. 27; it ended a 17‑game winless streak in Durham (since 1995) and was the school's first top‑five win on the road since 1993 quotable 2018 UVA FOOTBALL SCHEDULE Date Opponent (2017 Record) Series Record Sept. 1 Richmond (6-5) UVA leads 28-3-2 Sept. 8 at Indiana (5-7) UVA leads 2-1 Sept. 15 Ohio (9-4) UVA leads 1-0 Sept. 22 Louisville (8-5) UL leads 4-2 Sept. 29 at NC State (9-4) NCSU leads 34-22-1 Oct. 13 Miami (10-3) Miami leads 9-6 Oct. 20 at Duke (7-6) UVA leads 36-33 Oct. 27 North Carolina (3-9) UNC leads 63-55-4 Nov. 2 Pittsburgh (5-7) Pitt leads 7-3 Nov. 10 Liberty (6-5) First meeting Nov. 17 at Georgia Tech (5-6) GT leads 20-19-1 Nov. 23 at Virginia Tech (9-4) VT leads 57-37-5
