He came to South Bend in 1990 along with a freshman class teeming with more raw ability than any other Notre Dame group in the past 60 years. Fourteen of his 23 class- mates on the team made an NFL ros- ter, with Irish all-time pass efficiency leader Kevin McDougal not among them. Five of them — Jerome Bettis, Tom Carter, Bryant Young, Aaron Tay- lor and Jeff Burris — were first-round picks. During his four years at Notre Dame, Dawson caught 80 passes for 1,397 yards and four touch- downs as part of a run-heavy offense that was loaded with NFL talent at the skill positions.
