2018 Step Up to the Plate The 2018 Step Up to the Plate event was held at the John Paul Jones Arena on Saturday, January 27. With over 1,000 in attendance, this year's sold-out program raised over $70,000 in auction revenue and ticket sales. The 16 th annual event celebrated the night in a special way by inducting the inaugural class of the Virginia Baseball Hall of Fame. Channing Poole, the voice of Virginia Baseball, emceed the evening that began with UVA president Teresa Sullivan introducing new director of ath- letics, Carla Williams. Carla discussed how im- pressed she was with the UVA community and the support they give the baseball program. She then introduced coach Brian O'Connor, who addressed the crowd and thanked every- one for their support of Virginia Baseball, especially to the new renovation project at Disharoon Park. Coach O'Connor introduced the 2018 team and shared his goals for the season and future of the program. Dinner was served followed by the live and silent auc- tions and induction of the inaugural Virginia Baseball Hall of Fame class. The 2018 inductees included 15 members of the Virginia Baseball family comprised of student-athlete alumni and former coaches: OF – Brian Buchanan (1992-94) SS – Mike Cubbage (1969-71) LHP/1B – Sean Doolittle (2005-07) RHP – Seth Greisinger (1994-96) LHP – Danny Hultzen (2009-11) LHP/1B – Joe Koshansky (2001-04) LHP – Javier Lopez (1996-98) SS – Bill Narleski (1984-87) SS – Mark Reynolds (2002-04) LHP – Eppa Rixey (1912-14) RHP – Jacob Thompson (2006-08) Coach – Jim West (1962-80) RHP – Tyler Wilson (2008-11) Coach – Dennis Womack (1981-2003) 3B – Ryan Zimmerman (2003-05) Thank you to everyone who attended the event and supports Virginia Baseball. During the January 2018 NCAA Convention in Indianapo- lis, Indiana, the autonomy conferences voted to adopt 13 proposals that either have an immediate or August 1, 2018 effective date. Some of the proposals adopted are highlighted below: 1. The proposal that made headlines was in the area of student-athlete well-being. The adopted rule will require UVA to provide medical coverage to a student- athlete for athletically-related injuries sustained during practice or competition while at UVA for two years after the student-athlete graduates or leaves UVA. This proposal has an August 1, 2018 effective date. 2. During a prospective student-athlete's official visit to Grounds, coaching staff members may provide reasonable snacks, at the coaching staff's discretion, for the prospective student-athlete and up to four family members. This proposal has an immediate ef- fective date. 3. Student-athletes who host a prospective student-athlete during his/her official visit will be able to receive up to $75 per day to host the prospective student-athlete and up to four of the prospective student-athlete's family members. This proposal has an August 1, 2018 effective date. 4. Men's and women's basketball will have an earlier start date for their first contests. The first contest will be three days earlier than what it has been in the past. It can now occur on the Tuesday before the second Friday in November (November 6, 2018). This proposal has an August 1, 2018 effective date. 5. The football preseason model was adjusted for athlet- ically-related activities prior to a school's first game. Preseason practice may begin 29 days before the first scheduled contest and student-athletes will have 25 practice sessions. UVA will begin preseason practice on August 3, 2018. This proposal has an immediate effec- tive date for the 2018 football season.
