C O M If you attend enough spring games, the rituals start to become at least as important as the revela- tions after a while. Sure, there may be a few young players who have piqued your interest since the end of the previous season and who you're eager to see in action for maybe the first time. But for many longtime fans, the rationale for making that familiar drive yet again has less to do with the game itself than with the tailgating and the au- tograph session and the chance to spend a (hopefully) sunny spring weekend at the ol' alma mater, catching up with friends and visit- ing old haunts. It's easy to forget that for those young players, the spring game re- ally is a big deal. At Penn State this year, the list of intriguing newcom- ers includes both early enrollees and much-buzzed-about redshirt freshmen, guys such as Micah Par- sons, Ellis Brooks, K.J. Hamler, Mac Hippenhammer, Journey Brown and Sean Clifford, all of whom will be making their Beaver Stadium debuts when Penn State takes the field Saturday for the Blue-White Game. To hear coach James Franklin tell it, those players are ex- cited about the opportunity to play before what is likely to be one of the biggest spring game crowds in the country, weather permitting. "Last Saturday, Micah Parsons comes up to me with wide eyes about being in the stadium, so I think getting in there and being able to do that is important," NEW BEGINNINGS Young players are among the top draws in this year's Blue-White Game Franklin and his assistant coaches ad- dress the team follow- ing a spring practice ses- sion in Holuba Hall earlier this month. The Nittany Lions will hold their 15th and final practice of the spring on Saturday when they play the an- nual Blue- White Game. The game has drawn more than 50,000 fans in seven of the past nine years. Photo by Nate Bauer 1 A P R I L 1 8 , 2 0 1 8 B L U E W H I T E O N L I N E . C O M
