For now, thats what former Michigan Hobey Baker Award winner Brendan Morrison is hoping for after a second major knee surgery in three years. Now 36, Morrison is in camp with the Calgary Flames, trying to do his part as the teams oldest player. When things are going well and youre healthy, you think, I can play two or three more years, Morrison told the Vancouver Sun. Then when you go through another major injury its like, OK, lets kind of reset lets get through the next season healthy. That is kind of where I am at now. I am not naive enough to think you can play this game forever. Theres a chance that this could be my last year. Morrison was skating but hadnt been cleared for contact as of Sept. 22, but was hopeful hed be ready for Calgarys regular-season opener on Oct. 8. The good thing is I have had this done before I guess thats the bad thing as well but mentally, its much better, Morrison said. The first time around you dont know how hard to push. I have no reservations pushing, no insecurities about it being unstable. It feels real solid. Now its just getting into a little bit better skating shape. Im pretty happy where I am at. Showing he can come back from his injury, he added, would be his motivation. Just to prove again that I can contribute and that I am not done, he said. Like all guys, you want to go out on your own terms and not have that injury be the last time I play. I worked hard this summer on the knee, and now I am ramping up for games. Morrison (shown when he was with Vancouver) has undergone two major knee surgeries in the last three years, and he is now attempting to earn a roster spot with the Calgary Flames. photo courtesy vancouver canucks Headlinersthis month Former Michigan athletes in the news Marty Turco NHL Turco, 273-165-26-40 in his career, is looking for a team after spending most of last year as Chicagos backup. Television could be in his future, but hes not ready to retire. I want to play some more, Turco told ESPN.com. I still think I can play in this league. Im not ready for plans after hockey just yet. Zach Putnam MLB Cleveland called up the rookie pitcher and former Wolverine in September, and he picked up his first win Sept. 24 in an 8-2 victory over Minnesota. Putnam struck out three and allowed only one hit in 113 innings pitched to improve to 1-1 with a 6.35 ERA in six appearances. Courtney Sims NBA Sims signed with Turkish team VEF Riga in September after spending last year with the DongGuan New Century Leopards in China. Sims averaged 19.0 points, 8.9 rebounds and 3.1 blocks in seven Chinese League games last season after starting the 2010-11 season with Iowa of the NBDL, where he averaged 16.7 points and 9.6 rebounds in 43 games.
