AUGUST 2018 15 47.1 percent of his treys and averaged 10.8 points per contest against ACC opponents. His absence — due to a broken wrist — proved costly in the Wahoos' NCAA Tour- nament loss. Although he had a chance to be a first-round pick in the 2018 NBA Draft in June, he opted to return to UVA for his second-year campaign. Dicke was tabbed as a first-team All-ACC performer and the league Freshman of the Year, and became just the third UVA rookie to be named a first-team All-American by Longstreth/National Field Hockey Coaches Association. The native of Den Haag, Netherlands, av- eraged 1.05 goals and 2.45 points per game, both of which ranked second in the confer- ence plus sixth and eighth, respectively, nationally. She finished with a total of 21 goals and seven assists. She set the single-season school record for hat tricks by tallying five, including scoring three goals in the season opener against Fairfield despite playing the contest with a broken hand. In addition, Dicke tal- lied five game-winning goals during her rookie campaign. Other notable rookie performances include left-handed pitcher Andrew Abbott, who was tabbed as a Freshman All-American by Base- ball America and Collegiate Baseball. He is the first Cavalier since 2015 to achieve that feat, and did so after leading the team in appearances (24) and saves (six). He was on the mound for four of the team's seven shutouts and boasted a 3.18 ERA while striking out 78 in 51 innings. Abbott was joined on the ACC All-Fresh- man team by shortstop Tanner Morris, who hit .305 with 38 runs scored, two homers and 20 RBI in 48 games. In addition, men's soccer midfielder Joe Bell eared a spot on the ACC All-Freshman team, while wrestler Louie Hayes posted a 31-8 record and advanced to the quarter- finals in his first appearance at the NCAA Championships. Hayes, who finished one round shy of All-America honors, went un- defeated in ACC dual competition with a 5-0 record, led the league in dual points scored and finished as runner-up at 125 pounds at the ACC Championships. On the women's side, golfer Beth Lillie received All-ACC honors — one of four freshmen selected to the all-conference team. She was second on the team with a 73.47 stroke average and was UVA's top finisher at the ACC Championships, placing fifth overall. Lillie ranked No. 63 in the final Golfstat individual standings, which was 10th highest nationally among first-years. Women's soccer forward/midfielder Taryn Torres was named to Top Drawer Soccer's Freshman Best XI team, was a third-team All-ACC pick and earned a spot on the league All-Freshman squad. She tied for the team lead in goals (eight) and fin- ished second in points (17). Volleyball outside hitter Sarah Billiard also earned a spot on the ACC All-Freshman team after ranking second on the team with 2.84 kills per set. BREAKOUT ATHLETES Redshirt third-year pole vaulter Bridget Guy took her performance to new heights this year. After placing seventh at the ACC Indoor Championships, she set a school re- cord in the pole vault with a leap of 14 feet and 7.5 inches early in the outdoor season. Guy went on the claim the first women's ACC pole vault title in school history with a leap of 14-7.25 at the outdoor meet. She then capped her stellar season by becoming the first UVA woman to earn All-America honors in the pole vault. She tied for fourth (14-1.25) at the NCAA Outdoor Championships to become the first UVA female to earn first-team All-America honors since 2014. It also marked the pro- gram's best individual finish since Stepha- nie Garcia placed second in the 3,000-meter steeplechase in 2011. For the men, third-year golfer Thomas Walsh entered this year looking for his first career victory. He got it in impressive fash- ion at the ACC Championships in April. He shot the lowest score in the 65-year history of the tournament with a 16-under-par 200 to take home the league's individual crown. Walsh finished the season ranked No. 39 nationally by Golfstat and No. 65 by Golf- week, after posting six top-10 showings and being UVA's best finisher in eight of 12 tournaments. He led UVA with 23 rounds under par and a 70.71 stroke average, was named All-ACC and was tabbed as a third-team PING All- American by the Golf Coaches Association of America. Honorable mention notice goes to base- ball third-year right-handed pitcher Daniel Lynch and lacrosse second-year attack Mi- chael Kraus. Lynch posted a 5.17 ERA in 27 appear- ances his first two years, but was stellar in 2018. He posted a 4-4 record with a 3.96 ERA in 13 starts and became the first Cava- lier to hit triple digits in strikeouts (105) since 2015. The 6-4, 195-pounder notched eight qual- ity starts (seven versus ACC opponents) and struck out 10 or more in four straight games versus ACC foes during one stretch, including a career-best 13 versus Georgia Tech May 14. Kraus received All-ACC and second-team All-America honors after leading UVA with 44 goals, 39 assists and 83 points. He be- came just the third Cavalier to tally 80 points in a single season, and his 83 points rank No. 2 on the all-time single-season list. 2017-18 DIRECTORS' CUP FINAL STANDINGS Rk. School Points 1.
