12 CAVALIER CORNER BY STEVE DOWNEY T HE UNIVERSITY OF VIRGINIA athletics department has been a model of consistency over the past three decades. Even with a change in leadership, the beat went on for the Cavaliers in 2017‑18. In October, Carla Williams was tabbed to replace Craig Littlepage — who retired after 16 years on the job — as UVA's director of athletics. Williams, who spent the previous 13 years as an athletics administrator at the University of Georgia, became the first fe‑ male African‑American and the fifth active female athletics director at the Power Five conference level. With Williams on board — she started her new post in December — UVA went on to finish 21st in the final 2017‑18 Learfield Sports Directors' Cup standings. It marked the 12th straight year the Cavaliers finished among the top 25 in the ultimate measure of success for college athletics programs. Virginia is one of just 12 schools nation‑ ally to rank in the top 30 of the final stand‑ ings during the entire 25‑year existence of the Directors' Cup. The others are Cali‑ fornia, Florida, Georgia, Michigan, North Carolina, Ohio State, Penn State, Southern California, Stanford, Texas and UCLA. UVA also checked in at No. 10 in Yahoo Sports' listing of the top Power Five pro‑ grams in overall athletic success over the past five school years. The ranking is based on each school's average Directors' Cup finish over that time period. CONTINUED EXCELLENCE Even With A Change In Leadership, UVA Remained A Directors' Cup Fixture With Another Top-25 Finish In 2017-18
