AUGUST 2018 29 UVA Day at Nats Park On June 23, hundreds of excited Virginia alumni, donors and fans from around the greater Wash- ington D.C. area took over Nationals Park for University of Virginia Day. It was a wonderful opportunity for everyone to show their Wahoo pride with custom co-branded hats, while cheer- ing on former UVA baseball standouts, Ryan Zimmerman, Sean Doolittle, and Mark Reynolds. Staff members from Virginia Athletics Foundation and Virginia Sports Promotions teamed up to engage with hundreds of enthusiastic fans who brought their family and friends to the table. Thank you to everyone who stopped by and shared your passion for Virginia Athletics with us! Logan Carrington, Virginia Track and Field alum '17, was one of the hundreds in attendance. As a result of some historic NCAA rule changes, the student-athlete transfer process will be simplified begin- ning October 15, 2018. After a year's work by the NCAA Transfer Working Group, the NCAA Council adopted legisla- tive change in June 2018 to the transfer rule. The change surrounds the requirement for a student-athlete to seek "permission to contact" another school from their cur- rent school, to the student-athlete notifying their current school that they will be looking at another NCAA school, or "notification of transfer." The current "permission to contact" rule requires a stu- dent-athlete to obtain permission from their current school before contacting another school. This transfer process was far from perfect and also gained national headlines when a coach or school would not grant permission for the student-athlete to speak with another school or a specific school. Additionally, if the permission to contact was not granted, the student-athlete would be prohibited from re- ceiving athletics aid at his/her new school. In the new "notification of transfer" model, a student- athlete can simply inform their current institution that they would like to transfer. The student-athlete's current institu- tion will then be required to place the student-athlete's name in a national transfer database within two business days. Once the student-athlete's name is in the database, other coaches may contact the student-athlete about transferring to their school. With the new notification pro- cess, a student-athlete will not be prohibited from receiv- ing athletics aid at the new school. In a subsequent and separate rule changed that was ad- opted in June 2018 as well, Autonomy conference schools may cancel a student-athlete's athletics financial aid if the student-athlete notifies the school of their interest in transferring. If a student-athlete notifies their current school that they want to transfer, the school may now cancel their athletics aid immediately and effective at the end of the term. For example, if John Doe is on athletics aid for the fall 2018 semester and notifies UVA of his intent to transfer in mid-October, UVA may cancel his athletics aid immediately, to become effective at the end of the fall term. Or, if John Doe waits to notify UVA of his intent to transfer during winter break or during the summer break, the athletics aid may be cancelled immediately, rather than having to wait until the next academic year. Hopefully, when these rule changes become effective on October 15, 2018, it will provide both the student-athlete and school the desired outcome they want if a student- athlete decides to transfer. This gives the student-athlete the ability to speak with any school they wish to about transferring and to receive athletics aid at the new school. For the school, this gives the ability to cancel a student- athletes aid if they no longer want to be part of the team. Student-Athlete Transfer Rule Changes Eric Baumgartner, Associate Athletics Director for Compliance compliance corner 4 Wahoos In The World Cup Four members of the Virginia Women's Soccer program will represent the United States this fall at the FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup in France. Laurel Ivory '21, Zoe Morse '20, Alexa Spaanstra '22 and Taryn Torres '21 were all se- lected to compete for the U.S. U-20 Women's Na- tional Team. The tournament begins on Monday, August 5, and runs through Friday, August 24. Ivory and Spaanstra both make their second appearance representing the United States at a FIFA World Cup, having served as starters for the U.S. at the 2016 FIFA U-17 Women's World Cup in Jordan. "Our entire program is extremely proud of, and excited for, Zoe, Laurel, Taryn and Alexa for making the final roster for the Under 20 Women's World Cup in France," said Virginia head coach Steve Swanson. "Each of them has worked extraordinarily hard to put them- selves in a position to be selected. It is an honor anytime you wear the United States jersey, but especially in a World Cup. We know these four will represent their country, the University of Virginia, their families and themselves excep- tionally well, and we look forward to support- ing them and the entire team throughout the tournament."
