cavalier sports AUGUST 2018 7 A native of Barcelona, Spain, Sergi Nus tore his right ACL and damaged the menis- cus cartilage on the final day of 2017 during his winter break. He missed Virginia's spring exhibition schedule, but after a successful operation Feb. 5 the third-year center back is expected to be ready for the start of the 2018 season. Nus, who earned third-team All-ACC ac- colades in 2017, is the Cavaliers' top return- ing goal scorer (six) and point producer (13) despite being a defender. He was UVA's go- to guy for penalty kicks last year, converting all four of his attempts. My advice to student-athletes is: First of all, strive for greatness on and off the field. There are a lot of kids around America and other countries trying to get an op- portunity to study and play at a high level. Make every day count and try to improve every day. Because when you're not grind- ing there is another guy that is. The primary challenge facing student- athletes today is: Manage the distractions that college life provides and realize how fortunate you are to be selected to play for your school and to be able to represent them around America. The best thing about UVA is: The coaching staff and the community plus the people you get to meet through your years here. Why I chose UVA: It's all about excel- lence. On and off the field, you have to be the best in both areas. What I like the most about soccer: Be- ing better than the other team. The highlight of my athletic career: Winning at Louisville in the fall of 2017 in the ACC quarterfinals. The most important thing I've learned from soccer: You can't win by yourself. Helping each other is key. My dream vacation would be: Maldives. My post-college ambition is: To play in the MLS. Keep improving as a soccer player and a person. — Mike Scandura Nus is the top returning goal scorer (six) and point producer (13) for this year's UVA men's soccer team. Lynch boasted a career-best 3.94 ERA in 2018, striking out 105 batters in 88 2 ⁄3 innings pitched. He became the first Cavalier to post at least 100 strikeouts since 2015 and just the second ever to fan double-digit oppo- nents in four straight starts. JORDAN SCOTT MEN'S TRACK AND FIELD The rising third-year from Portmore, Ja- maica, won his home country's national title in the triple jump June 21 at the Ja- maica Senior National Championships in Kingston. Scott leaped 16.55 meters (54 feet, 3.75 inches) to claim the crown and break the school record, which had stood since 2012. During the school year, Scott earned a pair of second-team All-America laurels in the event with 10th- and 12th-place showings at the NCAA Outdoor and Indoor Championships, respectively. HEIDI LONG • ROWING The rising fourth- year capped a season in which she helped the Cavaliers' varsity eight win an ACC title and finish seventh nationally with first-team All-ACC and All-America honors. The Buckinghamshire, England, native was one of three Cavs to earn All-America laurels to extend the pro- gram's streak of campaigns with multi- ple such honorees to 18 straight years. In early July, Long also took part in the prestigious Henley Royal Regatta in her home country, where she was part of the women's pair that won the Hambleden Challenge Cup.
