"As guys know that you're a shooter, well, they're going to try to run you off the line. "If you can shoot from a little bit be- hind the line or you can develop some counter moves to drive to the rim, [it helps]." In his first three preseason games with the Bucks, Connaughton aver- aged 9.7 points on 10-of-24 shooting (41.7 percent) overall and a 6-of-15 ef- fort (40.0 percent) from deep in 18.0 minutes per game. The next two years will be crucial for Connaughton and his long-term NBA future. If he fails to find consistency off the bench with the Bucks, the for- mer Irish star may have to find a new career path. A return to professional baseball is not out of the question. Connaughton is solely focused on making his career in basketball work for now, but he will likely have base- ball as an option for the next several years. The Baltimore Orioles, who drafted Connaughton in the fourth round in 2014, still own his rights until 2020, which is the same year his cur- rent NBA deal will end. Though he will be 27 by the time that rolls around, Connaughton has the luxury of being a pitcher and not having the wear and tear some others his age may have while chasing the dream. Luckily for Connaughton, he has two more years to use the chip on his shoulder and prove he has what it takes to produce a long-term career in the NBA before even reconsidering try- ing his luck on the baseball diamond.
