52 NOV. 26, 2018 BLUE & GOLD ILLUSTRATED ND SPORTS MEN'S CROSS COUNTRY No. 10 Notre Dame earned a bid to the NCAA Championships with a second-place finish at the NCAA Great Lakes Regional Nov. 9 in Terre Haute, Ind. Sophomore Yared Nuguse led the way with a third-place finish, clocking a time of 31:11.8 on the 10-kilometer course. The NCAA Championships were held Nov. 17 in Madison, Wis. WOMEN'S CROSS COUNTRY The No. 18 Fighting Irish finished fourth at the NCAA Great Lakes Regional Nov. 9 in Terre Haute, Ind. The strong showing helped Notre Dame earn an at-large bid to the NCAA Championships. Se- nior Anna Rohrer finished second in the women's six-kilometer race with a time of 20:20.1. The NCAA Championships were held Nov. 17 in Madison, Wis. HOCKEY (5-4-1 OVERALL, 2-2-0 BIG TEN) After falling 2-1 Nov. 9 in the opener of a two- game series at Michigan, No. 8 Notre Dame bounced back with an offensive explosion en route to a 6-2 triumph over the Wolverines Nov. 10. The Irish netted five of their six goals in the second period to take a 6-1 lead into the third and final frame. The six goals for the Irish marked the team's highest total since a season-opening 6-6 tie against Mercyhurst Oct. 12. Four different players put the puck in the net for the Irish, with fresh- man forward Alex Steeves tallying the first two goals of his Irish career to lead the way. The Irish hit the road again for a two-game set at Michigan State Nov. 16-17. MEN'S SOCCER (10-6-2 OVERALL, 4-3-1 ACC) The No. 16 Fighting Irish earned the No. 7 over- all seed in the NCAA Tournament. It marked the 21st time in program history the Irish earned a bid to the NCAA Tournament and the seventh straight year they have been selected for a top-16 national seed. Notre Dame was set to face the winner of the first-round matchup between Michigan and Princeton Nov. 18. The Irish defeated the Wolver- ines 2-1 earlier in the season in Ann Arbor. MEN'S SWIMMING AND DIVING (3-4 OVERALL, 2-1 ACC) At the Big Ten/ACC Challenge Nov. 10-11 in West Lafayette, Ind., two swimmers from No. 18 Notre Dame captured medals, but the Big Ten won the title in the all-star event. Sopho- more Zach Yeadon earned silver medals in both the 500 (4:13.68) and 1,000 freestyle (8:51.97), while freshman Marton Barta took the bronze in both the 200 (1:46.79) and 400 individual medley (3:45.95). Next up for the Irish is the Ohio State Fall Invita- tional Nov. 15-17 in Columbus, Ohio. WOMEN'S SWIMMING AND DIVING (7-0-1 OVERALL, 4-0 ACC) The No. 13 Fighting Irish participated in the Big Ten/ACC Challenge Nov. 10-11 in West Lafayette, Ind. The Big Ten also captured the women's title. Irish junior Abbie Dolan was part of the 400 free- style and 800 freestyle relays that both finished second. Notre Dame was set to compete at the Ohio State Fall Invitational Nov. 15-17 in Columbus, Ohio. VOLLEYBALL (15-11 OVERALL, 9-7 ACC) Notre Dame dropped two straight games, fall- ing 3-1 to North Carolina State at home Nov. 9 and 3-2 at Florida State Nov. 11.
