JANUARY 2019 THE WOLVERINE 59   OLYMPIC SPORTS UPDATE This season, Hallahan scored eight goals and tallied eight assists, and was one of the 15 semifinalists for the MAC Herman Trophy (nation's best player). He was the fifth player in Michigan history to reach the 20-point mark in back-to-back sea- sons after having 25 points in 2017. VOLLEYBALL Michigan advanced the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament, where it lost to Texas. This was the Wolverines' seventh trip to an NCAA regional in program history and first since 2016. The Wolverines finished the campaign with a 24-10 record. "Playing deep into the NCAA Tournament is a goal for us every year," head coach Mark Rosen said. "But it's a difficult task and a lot of things have to happen right and come together coming out of a such a tough conference." To begin the season, Michigan won its first 11 matches, all coming in nonconference play. "We went to Europe in June and that really set a good foundation for us and allowed us to have a really good start," Rosen said. "We had a chance to have all our incoming play- ers incorporated into the system." In the NCAA Tournament, the Wolverines defeated Navy 3-0 and Pittsburgh 3-2, before falling to the Longhorns. Michigan was led by se- niors Jenna Lerg and Carly Skojdt, who were both selected to the Ameri- can Volleyball Coaches Association All-North Region team "They're such veterans for us," Rosen said. "Their experience level is huge. They've played in this confer- ence and have started for four years. "They bring so much knowledge and experience to the table." ❏ Updates On Winter Sports In Progress Women's Basketball: (7-3 Overall) Michigan opened 7-3 after playing four ranked opponents in its first 10 games … The Wolverines beat No. 21 Missouri 70-54 in the Gulf Coast Showcase, and lost to No. 10 Texas, at No. 13 North Carolina State and at No. 22 Marquette … U-M has only played three homes games in the early portion of the season … Senior Hallie Thome has continued to step up this season for the Wolverines … Through 10 games, she was averaging a team-high 13.0 points and 5.7 rebounds per contest and shooting a team-best 58.8 percent from the floor … Thorne has been named to the list of candidates for the 2019 Wade Trophy, presented to the best player in the country by the Women's Basketball Coaches Association. Women's Gymnastics In an exhibition meet Dec. 2 against Eastern Michigan, Central Michigan and Western Michigan, the Wolverines won with a score of 195.125 … In her first collegiate meet, freshman Natalie Wojcik had the top-all-around score … Fresh- man Abby Brenner won vault, and junior Lexi Funk was the top scorer on beam … The Wolverines will begin their regular season Jan. 4 at the Cancun Classic in Mexico, where they will compete against Iowa State, Rutgers and West Virginia. Men's Swimming & Diving: (5-0 Overall, 2-0 Big Ten) At the Georgia Fall Invitational Nov. 29-Dec. 1, No. 6 Michigan finished second out of five teams with three Wolverines having great success … Sophomore Ricardo Vargas — who was named was named the Big Ten Swimmer of the Week — won four event finals at the Georgia Fall Invitational, including the 500- yard freestyle (4:11.45) and the 1,650-yard freestyle (14:35.04) … Sophomore Ross Todd won all three diving events at the Georgia Fall Invitational: 1-meter (359.45), 3-meter (388.25) and platform (346.30), earning him co-Big Ten Diver of the Week … Patrick Callan won Big Ten Freshman of the Week after he won the 200-yard freestyle (1:33.89) and took second in the 500-yard freestyle (4:12.56) at the Georgia Fall Invitational. Women's Swimming and Diving: (5-0 Overall, 2-0 Big Ten) The No. 3 Wolverines are off to a hot start to the season, beginning 5-0 while also notching a first-place finish at the Georgia Fall Invitational … Michigan had many strong performances at that meet, highlighted by sophomore diver Nikki Canale and freshman swimmer Maggie MacNeil … Canale won 1-meter (287.10), and finished third on both the 3-meter (312.65) and platform (235.65) en route to being named the Big Ten Diver of the Week … MacNeil captured her third Big Ten Freshman of the Week honor, after winning the 100-yard butterfly (49.97) and 100-yard backstroke (51.31), finishing second in the 50-yard freestyle (21.93) and taking sixth in the 100-yard freestyle (48.25) … MacNeil became the fourth woman in NCAA history to break 50 seconds in the 100-yard butterfly, lowering her previously-held Big Ten and school records … MacNeil also set the school record in the 50-yard freestyle and moved to No. 2 at U-M in the 100-yard backstroke. Wrestling: (3-0 Overall, 1-0 Big Ten) No. 5 Michigan has already defeated No. 6 Lehigh (21-13), Central Michigan (32-12) and Indiana (32-7) … At the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational, the Wolver- ines finished fifth out of 42 teams … Redshirt junior Myles Amine, ranked No. 3 in the country at 174 pounds, has started the season 9-0 overall record, includ- ing winning the title at the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational after posting a 6-0 tournament ledger. — Andrew Hussey The U-M volleyball squad advanced to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament for the seventh time in program history.
