C O M Piedmont Capital Asset Management LLC A Registered Investment Advisor F ormer Virginia men's tennis standout Somdev Devvarman was inducted into the ITA Men's Collegiate Tennis Hall of Fame March 29 as a member of the six- person 2019 class. "The 2019 class is very accomplished. We are extremely excited to add all six members into the Hall of Fame," said John Frierson, ITA Men's Collegiate Tennis Hall of Fame curator. The other five inductees include coaches Dave Fish and Greg Patton, and players Roy Barth, Sargis Sargsian and Doug Verdieck. The most decorated player in ACC his- tory, Devvarman capped his historic career in 2008. A school-record five-time All- American, he was a two-time NCAA sin- gles champion and a two-time ITA National Player of the Year. The native of India was also a four-time All-ACC honoree. He ended his career with a school-record 158 singles wins and is currently third all time at Virginia with 126 doubles victories. He also holds the national record with 18 career wins in the NCAA singles tournament. As a fourth-year, Devvarman dominated collegiate tennis with a 44-1 singles record, claimed his second straight NCAA singles title and was ranked No. 1 in the ITA sin- gles rankings the entire sea- son. In doubles, he and Treat Huey were ranked No. 1 by the ITA throughout the regular season and earned All-Amer- ica honors for the second time. Devvarman finished 2008 as the ACC Player of the Year. In 2006-07, the third-year became the first player from the ACC to win the NCAA singles championship and ended the year ranked No. 1 by the ITA. He was named the ITA National Player of the Year and won the organiza- tion's Rafael Osuna Sportsmanship Award. Devvarman earned All-America status for the first time in 2005-06, after he reached the final of the NCAA singles tournament. During his rookie season, he was named the ACC Freshman of the Year, becoming the third Cavalier to win the award. On Jan. 23, 2009 Devvarman became the first Cavalier tennis player to have his jersey retired. "The first time I found out, I wasn't really sure what was going on," he said follow- ing the ceremony. "But to experience the whole thing was very humbling — to be the first of so many great Virginia tennis players, and hopefully I won't be the last." He earned his degree in so- ciology from UVA and turned pro in the summer of 2008. "On behalf of the ITA, I am delighted to announce that this distinguished class will be entering the ITA Men's Col- legiate Tennis Hall of Fame," said Timothy Russell, ITA Chief Executive Officer. "These six inductees showcase the very best of the college tennis, and exude incredible talent, dedication and commitment to our sport." The 2019 ITA Men's Collegiate Tennis Hall of Fame Induction Luncheon took place May 19 in Orlando, Fla.
