28 CAVALIER CORNER Denny Smythe earned a bachelor's degree in Me- dia Studies and American Studies from the Univer- sity of Virginia in May of 2018. As an undergradu- ate student, she worked with the Marketing and Promotions Department in Men's and Women's Soccer, Football, Men's Basketball, and Men's Lacrosse. She also worked with Wahoo Central, the social media marketing team to promote the Ath- letics Department. Following graduation, Denny moved to Charlotte, NC to work for the Carolina Panthers with the Hospitality and Fan Engagement team as an intern. Denny joined the Virginia Athletics Foundation in March of 2019. Denny as- sists in managing suite operations at Scott Stadium, Davenport Field, and the John Paul Jones Arena. She assists in planning and implementing athletics events in addi- tion to spring and fall social tours, sports reunions, sport-specific fundraisers, mas- ter-plan fundraisers, special celebrations, facility dedications, and more. VAF Staff Update After a multiyear vetting process, the NCAA Student- Athlete Experience Committee developed a new recruit- ing model for Division I coaches that better aligns the decision-making timeline of a prospective student-athlete with the decision-making timeline for any prospective college student. The NCAA membership pushed for a tiered recruiting concept in which communication is per- mitted before visits and in-person contact. It is important for a coach and a prospective student-athlete to develop a relationship and determine if there is mutual interest be- fore a visit to Grounds or off-Grounds contact. For many of UVA's sport programs, communication with a prospect may not occur before June 15 at the con- clusion of the prospect's sophomore year in high school.
