The Wolverines face three of those foes in a four-game stretch — at Penn State Oct. 19, versus Notre Dame Oct. 26 and versus Michigan State Nov. 16 — but have at Maryland Nov. 2 and a bye also mixed in to that grouping. U-M ranked eighth in that category (4.58) a year ago. 0 U-M quarterbacks that have thrown for at least 22 touchdowns and 2,600 yards in two different sea- sons. Senior quarterback Shea Patterson would be- come the first if he were able to duplicate his num- bers from last year. Chad Henne (2004-07) threw for 22 or more scores three times, but only surpassed 2,600 yards once. John Navarre (2000-03) eclipsed 2,900 passing yards twice, but threw for more than 21 touchdowns just once. 31-9 Was the combined record of the Wolverines' three non-conference foes a year ago. Middle Tennessee State went 8-6 and was the Conference USA runner- up; Army set a school record with 11 wins, took College Football Playoff (CFP) entrant Oklahoma to overtime and finished in the top 20 of both polls; and Notre Dame went 12-0 in the regular season be- fore being eliminated in the CFP by eventual national champion Clemson. FUTURE MICHIGAN FOOTBALL SCHEDULES 5 Current starting NFL centers were coached in college by offensive line mentor Ed Warinner, who thinks junior CESAR RUIZ "can be the next one," according to The Athletic's Bruce Feldman. PHOTO LON HORWEDEL "[Michigan head coach Jim] HARBAUGH is the top-ranked Big Ten coach, and we know you hate it. It's the truth until the season starts. Harbaugh has the ninth-best record among Power Five coaches at their current school with at least a full season. He's 7-4 against [Michigan State's] Mark Dantonio, [Penn State's] James Franklin and [Wisconsin's] Paul Chryst, and he'll get a first chance at [Ohio State's] Ryan Day this season. That's the game Harbaugh must win to live up to top-10 billing. Still mad about it? Well, he's taking [for- mer OSU head coach] Urban Meyer's spot for now." — Sporting News' Bill Bender, explaining why he placed Harbaugh at No. 10 in his June 12 ranking of all 130 college football coaches PHOTO BY PER KJELDSEN
