www.BLUEANDGOLD.com OCT. 7, 2019 15 UNDER THE DOME 90 Years Ago: Oct. 12, 1929 Minus head coach Knute Rockne, Notre Dame rallies from a 7-0 deficit to a 14-7 victory versus Navy in front of a capacity audience of 64,681 in Baltimore. A year earlier, the two teams had played in front of what was unofficially recorded as 120,000 at Chicago's Soldier Field. The Midshipmen take an early 7-0 lead before Notre Dame knots it at the half on an 11-yard pass from quarterback Frank Carideo to world-class speedster Jack Elder. Then early in the fourth quarter Carideo returns an interception to the Navy 32-yard line to set up a one-yard scoring run by Larry "Moon" Mullins. A week earlier in the opener at Indiana, Rockne was smashed into on a play toward the sideline, and phlebitis set in that grew into a serious health issue. 85 Years Ago: Oct. 6, 1934 In his head coaching debut at Notre Dame, legendary 1924 Four Horseman fullback Elmer Layden's Fighting Irish lose 7-6 at home to Texas — led by first-year head coach Jack Chevigny, a 1926-28 Fight- ing Irish halfback who scored a touchdown in the "One For The Gipper" victory (12-6) versus Army as a senior. The Longhorns eke out a 7-6 victory at Notre Dame Stadium when the Irish miss the extra point attempt. 55 Years Ago: Oct. 10, 1964 Notre Dame plays in the state of Colorado for the first time when it has its initial meeting with the Air Force Academy. The AFA in Colorado Springs opened its doors in 1954 and hired Buck Shaw — an All-American at Notre Dame under Knute Rockne — as its first football coach in 1956. First-year head coach Ara Parseghian's No. 6 Fighting Irish fall behind 7-0 when quarterback John Huarte tosses an interception returned for a touchdown, but Huarte responds by passing for two touchdowns to Jack Snow and Bill Wolski, and running for two more in a 34-7 victory. 45 Years Ago: Oct. 12, 1974 One of the longest drives in Notre Dame history in terms of time elapsed results in a hair-raising 10-3 victory at home versus heavy underdog Rice. With the score tied 3-3 and 12:53 left in the con- test, the Irish take possession at their 20-yard line and methodically drive 80 yards in 20 plays, capped by a one-yard run by fullback Wayne "The Train" Bullock with 3:08 remaining. The drive milked 9:45 off the clock, but the close call dropped the 4-1 and reigning national champi- ons from No. 6 to No. 7 in the Associated Press poll. 30 Years Ago: Oct. 7, 1989 No. 1 Notre Dame extends its winning streak to 17 games with a 27-17 victory at Stanford under first-year head coach Dennis Green. Cardinal quarterback Steve Smith passes 68 times and completes 39 — both still records by a Notre Dame opponent — but the yardage total is only 282 yards, or a pedestrian 4.1 yards per attempt. Still, the ball control keeps Stanford competitive and it ties the score at 14 in the third quarter on an Ed McCaffrey touchdown reception, followed by a two-point run by fullback Tommy Vardell. Notre Dame sophomore Raghib "Rocket" Ismail then returns the ensuing kickoff 66 yards to the Stanford 16- yard line, setting up the go-ahead touchdown run by fullback Anthony Johnson. Stanford is whistled for one penalty while Notre Dame has eight for 75 yards. Particularly galling to Fighting Irish head coach Lou Holtz are several conspicuous holding calls on the 68 pass attempts. Only one is called, but is declined after an incomplete pass. — Lou Somogyi Anniversaries In Notre Dame Athletics History: Oct. 6‑12 In 1964, quarterback John Huarte tossed a pair of scoring passes to lead the Irish to a 34-7 victory versus the Air Force Academy in Notre Dame's first-ever game in the state of Colorado.
