Hill pitched 2 2 ⁄3 innings, and allowed just one hit with an earned run. However, the Nationals beat the Dodgers 6-1 Oct. 7, which tied the National League Division Series up at 2-2, before the Nationals clinched and advanced in game five. Hill pitched in 13 games during the regular season and went 4-1 with a 2.45 ERA and struck out 72 batters in 58 2 ⁄3 innings. The 39-year-old lefty battled injuries all year, but hopes the Dodgers bring him back to pitch at age 40 next season after three and a half seasons with the franchise. Kyle Connor • NHL Not that long ago, it seemed unsure of when and where Connor would again suit up in the NHL. The 22-year-old was coming off a career year — 34 goals, 32 assists and 66 points — but held out this preseason as a restricted free agent. The former first-round pick was awarded a new contract Sept. 28, when the Winnipeg Jets announced they had signed the forward from Shelby Township, Mich., to a seven-year deal with an average annual value of $7.14 million. Through 10 games, the left wing has three goals and an assist for the 5-5 squad. Jordan Poole • NBA As of Oct. 21, the No. 28 overall pick in the 2019 NBA Draft by the Golden State Warriors ranked ninth among rookies with an average of 13.2 points per game in the preseason. The 6-5 guard averaged 22.6 minutes, 1.4 rebounds and 1.0 assist in his first five exhibitions. Poole notched 17 points on 4-of-9 shooting from behind the arc in his debut Oct. 5, and then set a preseason best with 19 points in 21 minutes during his second outing. He has made multiple three-pointers in every preseason contest so far and is expected to earn immediate minutes with a frame that has packed on 20 pounds since the end of Las Vegas Summer League. "I just like his confidence," head coach Steve Kerr told The San Francisco Chronicle. "I love his skill, and you can see his skill on tape." — Ryan Tice HEADLINERS Former Michigan athletes in the news this month Philadelphia Eagles defensive end Brandon Graham notched 4.0 sacks in the first seven games, tying for 22nd in the NFL for quarter- back takedowns.
