TOP OF THE CLASS ✦ GIMME FIVE This year's 93rd consecutive meeting with Navy since the start of the series in 1927 is eas- ily the longest continuing rivalry for the Notre Dame football program. Next season, the two schools will open Aug. 29 in Ireland, marking the third time they will meet there (1996 and 2012 being the oth- ers), and then make it an even 100 straight in 2026. Despite Notre Dame winning 43 in a row in the series from 1964 to 2006, an NCAA record by one school against another, neither school has demonstrated any signs of ending their annual meeting. Here are the five other longest uninterrupted series Notre Dame has had with a school, with just one such series still active: School (Years) Streak 1. USC (1946-present) 74 2. Purdue (1946-2014) 69 3. Michigan State (1959-94) 36 4. Army (1919-47) 29 5. Pittsburgh (1956-78) 23 The game at Stanford Nov. 30 will tie the Car- dinal with Pitt for the fifth longest streak. Next year, the Cardinal will take sole possession of the fifth spot. Northwestern also reached 20 from 1929-48. CHARTING THE IRISH POLL POSITION The College Football Playoff made its debut in 2014 with the initial top 25 coming out in early November since then. In that time, 69 different teams have appeared in the rankings. Of those teams, Notre Dame has spent the seventh most weeks in the top 25 at 22 weeks out of a possible 32. They are also one of 10 teams to make the College Football Playoff, with a ranking high of No. 3. Just three teams have appeared in the top 25 of every ranking: Alabama, Clemson and Ohio State. Oklahoma, LSU and Utah have each spent 25 weeks or more in the top 25. No 2019 Notre Dame opponent is in the top 10 in terms of weeks spent in the rankings, but Michigan and Georgia are tied for No. 11 and have each spent 20 weeks in the top 25 since 2014. USC has spent 17 weeks ranked, Stanford 15 and Louis- ville 11. Other than Michigan and USC, the only other 2019 Irish opponent to appear in the initial col- lege football ranking was Navy at No. 24. The Midshipmen have spent nine weeks in the College Football Playoff rankings since the 2014 season. Getting To Know … SENIOR DEFENSIVE END KHALID KAREEM Hometown: Farmington Hills, Mich.
