14 THE WOLVERINE FEBRUARY 2020   INSIDE MICHIGAN ATHLETICS FIVE YEARS AGO, 2015: Michigan snapped a five-game losing streak by taking down Ohio State 64-57 at Crisler Center. An injury-riddled crew of Wol- verines managed to right themselves on Feb. 22 in beating the Buckeyes. In fact, they never once fell behind the visitors, leading by as many as 20 points and riding the hot shooting of Spike Albrecht and Zak Irvin to the win. Albrecht notched 16 points, dealt off five assists and grabbed four re- bounds to pace the squad, while Irvin scored 15 and pulled down seven re- bounds in addition to a career-best four assists. U-M jumped out to a 15-6 advantage in the opening 6:43 and never looked back. They expanded the margin to 23-9 and led 39-23 at the half. The Buckeyes opened the second half on a 9-3 streak, before Max Biel- feldt's three-point play stabilized the situation. Later, OSU scored 14 straight points to pull within three, but the Wolverines held them off down the stretch. "Nothing trumps hard work and be- lieving," head coach John Beilein said. "They did a great job today of cover- ing the details. We worked very hard on them, but executing the details and doing it with passion. That was as charged up as we've been all year." 10 YEARS AGO, 2010: John Beilein's crew trailed Iowa by five points with just 22 seconds left in regulation, but scrambled back for a stunner of an 80-78 overtime win in Carver-Hawkeye Arena on Feb. 16. It's tough enough to win on the road in the Big Ten, but Michigan needed the comeback, fueled by a rallying spirit and a season-high 14 three- point field goals. DeShawn Sims paced the Wolverines with 27 points and 10 rebounds, while Manny Harris tossed in 20 points with 10 rebounds as well. Laval Lucas-Perry added 13 points for Michigan. A 10-0 run staked U-M to an early lead, and the Wolverines led 26-17 at one point. Iowa's 14-4 run allowed the Hawkeyes to run to the halftime locker room tied at 33-33. Iowa eventually put itself in position to win in regulation, but Sims' three- pointer with only six seconds remain- ing in the normal 40 minutes sent the game to an extra session. Stu Douglass' three-pointer gave Michigan a 73-72 lead with 1:45 left in overtime, and U-M hung on for the win, despite Iowa's Aaron Fuller scor- ing a game-high 30 points with 13 re- bounds. 25 YEARS AGO, 1995: Steve Fish- er's Wolverines asserted themselves to capture a key Big Ten victory with a 61-50 triumph over Indiana at Crisler Arena. The win followed a terrible start for U-M, which fell behind Bob Knight's Hoosiers, 10-0, right out of the gate. A technical foul on Knight appeared to trigger an 18-6 Michigan run that allowed the Wolverines to capture a 25-20 lead entering halftime. "We started so slowly," Fisher noted. "Indiana was able to make it happen. We were lucky to get back in it after being down 10-0." Led by Jimmy King's 17 points, the Wolverines were able to pull away for the win. Defense played a major role in the victory, Michigan limiting the Hoosiers to only 30 percent shooting from the field. "I think they played well defensively," Knight said. "They're a pretty good de- fensive team." — John Borton THIS MONTH IN MICHIGAN ATHLETICS HISTORY Junior guard Jimmy King scored a team-high 17 points to lead the Wolverines to a 61-50 win over Indiana on Feb. 19, 1995.
