Knowing they needed to upgrade their skill at forward, on the blue line and in net, the U-M coaches landed one of the nation's premier recruiting classes, signing seven prospects while three more will enroll as walkons in the fall. "We think this class will definitely get us closer to the kind of Michigan player contingent we should have," head coach Red Berenson said. Forwards Should Contribute Immediately The U.S. National Team Development Program, based in Ann Arbor, has served the role of a quasi minor league for the Wolverines. The NTDP has sent 31 alums to U-M since 2000, and will increase that tally by three with the addition of forwards J.T. Compher, Tyler Motte and Evan Allen. The 6-0, 165-pound Compher is the centerpiece of the class, and he was No. 34 in the 2013 NHL Central Scouting Service final draft rankings. In 53 games for Team USA this year, the Northbrook, Ill., native notched 17 goals and 31 assists. But it is his all-around game and attitude that excite Michigan's staff. "He's very businesslike," said assistant coach Brian Wiseman, who mentors the forwards. "In that sense, he'll give himself every chance to be successful early on and throughout his career.
