Left DefenseRight Defense Sr. Mac Bennett Fr. Michael Downing Red Berenson has always liked pairing a senior with a freshman, and Bennett is Michigan's top blue liner and Downing its top defensive rookie. Fr. Nolan De Jong Jr. Brennan Serville This is where things get interesting. Among the returning veterans, Serville has the greatest potential to make a major leap forward in his development, and pairing him with a freshman should push a sense of urgency. Sr. Kevin Clare Jr. Mike Chiasson Neither player is flashy, and both qualify as stay-at-home defensemen. Clare has a lot to prove after battling injuries and a suspension last season, while Chiasson has to show he deserves a regular spot in the lineup. Fr. Kevin Lohan Jr. Michael Szuma Fr. Spencer Hyman Lohan has size (6-5) and he plays physical. With tremendous upside, he could play his way into the top six. Szuma was coming on late in the year and could force Chiasson or even Serville aside. Goalie So. Steve Racine With the way he finished the season, going 8-1-1 down the stretch with a 2.08 goals-against average and a .921 save percentage, Racine has earned the No. 1 position, but will have to hold it against stiffer competition. Fr. Zach Nagelvoort Berenson has said that Nagelvoort will begin the year as Michigan's backup goalie, but the 6-2, 190-pound well-traveled rookie will be the first called upon if Racine suffers any hiccups next season. Sr. Adam Janecyk For a moment during the 2013 season, Janecyk looked capable of backstopping the Wolverines, but he would post a 3.46 goals-against average and an .892 save percentage and will only be used in case of emergency. Jr. Luke Dwyer Dwyer hasn't seen the ice yet in his career, and won't if Racine and Nagelvoort do their jobs. Such is the fate of a walk-on fourth-stringer.
