22 NOV. 14, 2020 BLUE & GOLD ILLUSTRATED total offense (91 of which came on the final drive) on 23 plays while Clemson had 145 on 21 plays. Notre Dame went 3 of 6 on third-down conversions while the Tigers were 0 of 3. Items: After Notre Dame forced a punt on the first play of the fourth quarter, a personal foul on Clemson on the fair catch gave the Irish possession at their 43- yard line, and a 29-yard catch-and-run by Mayer on third-and-seven set up a 44-yard field goal by Doerer and a 26-23 advan- tage with 11:37 remaining. Davis nearly held on to a pass into the end zone that was dislodged by safety Nolan Turner. On the first play after the kickoff, Uiag- alelei unleashed a deep ball to Cornell Powell, who came back on the ball for a 51-yard catch. Again, Clemson had to settle for three on a 30-yard Potter field goal to tie the game at 26 at the 9:42 mark … Clemson took its first lead of the game (33-26) with 3:33 left on a three-yard run by Etienne to conclude a 74-yard drive in 12 plays that took 5:41. The Tigers had a fourth-and-one at its 35 and opted to go for it, and Notre Dame jumped offside. Uiagalelei had a 10-yard scramble and also completed a 13-yard pass to Rodgers and a 14-yard middle screen to Powell on the play prior to the touchdown. FIRST OVERTIME TIED, 40-40 Clemson's first play was a 24-yard pass to Powell to the 1-yard line, and Uiagalelei bulled past the goal line on the ensuing snap. Notre Dame answered with a two-yard run by Williams, a 15-yard completion to Mayer, a five-yard toss to McKinley and then Williams powering over from the 3-yard line. SECOND OVERTIME NOTRE DAME, 47-40 Notre Dame had the initial possession this time and after offsetting penalties gave it a first down at the Clemson 20, Williams was thrown for a six-yard loss. Book answered with a 12-yard scram- ble followed by an 11-yard completion to fifth-year senior wide receiver Ben Skowronek. Two plays later, the line opened a huge hole on the right side for Williams' three-yard scoring run. The back-to-back sacks of Uiagalelei then resulted in the fourth-and-24 attempt that came up well short for Clemson, with McCloud recovering Galloway's fumble that he desperately tried to lateral. ✦ After taking over at the Irish 9-yard line with 1:48 remaining, fifth-year senior quarterback Ian Book directed a clutch eight-play, 91-yard drive to force overtime. He completed 22 of 39 passes for 310 yards with one score, plus had 67 rush- ing yards on 14 attempts.
