DECEMBER 2020 THE WOLVERINE 13 INSIDE MICHIGAN ATHLETICS FIVE YEARS AGO, 2015: Future NBA performers Caris LeVert and Duncan Robinson led the Wolverines to a 66-59 win at North Carolina State in the 2015 ACC/Big Ten Challenge Dec. 1. LeVert poured in 18 points, while Robinson tossed in five three-pointers on his way to 17. Michigan shot 50 percent (24-for-48) in the game, taking control in a 27-12 run. The Wolfpack made its own 12-1 run down the stretch to pull the home team within four, but Ricky Doyle and Robinson answered with buckets to give the Wolverines some breathing room. Three-pointers late by Robinson and Zak Irvin helped keep the Wolfpack at bay, and an 11-for-13 effort from the free throw line, tucked away an always-tough road win in the Challenge. LeVert couldn't believe the Wolfpack let Robinson roam as freely as it did. "I know I'm surprised, because if we were playing against a guy like Duncan, we'd never leave him open," LeVert said. "That's what we'd be preaching." "I'm going to start recruiting some Division II and III guys, I guess," NC State head coach Mark Gottfried said. "This guy played really well. He stepped up and made big shots." 10 YEARS AGO, 2010: Former Michigan head coach Tommy Amaker brought his Harvard team to Crisler Arena and gave the home crowd a scare in a 65-62 Michigan win Dec. 4. The Wolverines needed a 16-point second-half performance by Stu Douglass — who led U-M with 19 — to pull out a victory over the visitors. Zack Novak added 12 points and 11 rebounds for Michigan, while Darius Morris posted 13 points, five rebounds and five assists. John Beilein's crew shot 58 percent in the second half, nailing six three-pointers to come away with the win. Nine Michigan turnovers in the first half had the Wol- verines down at intermission, 32-25, but they came storming back. "Sometimes, last year, things started to not go our way and we kind of just crumbled," Douglass noted, regarding U-M's play in close contests. "But today, we came together and fought for 40 minutes." 25 YEARS AGO, 1995: Michigan snapped a six-game losing streak to Duke, taking down the Blue Devils 88-84 at Crisler Arena Dec. 9. Maceo Baston poured in a career-high 26 points in the win, and helped save the victory with a huge defensive play down the stretch. He swatted away a three-point attempt by Chris Collins with 16 seconds left in the game. "I thought I had it," Collins said. "It just shows how long Maceo Baston is. I saw Baston in the lane, and he came out of nowhere to get a piece of it. I had just hit one to tie it, and I thought that was going to be the game-winner." Maurice Taylor supplied 23 points for the Wolverines, who got the game- winning tallies on a pair of free throws by Louis Bullock with 31 seconds re- maining. "This was a great ball game," Taylor said. "There's no need for them to hang their heads over there. They played just as hard as we did." — John Borton THIS MONTH IN MICHIGAN ATHLETICS HISTORY Maceo Baston poured in a career-high 26 points while helping U-M snap a six-game losing streak to Duke in an 88-84 victory Dec. 9, 1995.
