HEAVYWEIGHT ACCOMPLISHMENT Former Michigan All-American heavyweight wrestler ADAM COON swept the best-of-three championship series April 3 in Fort Worth, Texas, to claim the 130 kg Greco-Roman gold medal at the U.S. Olympic Team Trials. It's the third straight year the 2018 world silver medalist and Fowlerville, Mich., native has earned the title of America's best Greco-Roman wrestler in the sport's largest weight class. However, his work is not done yet. In order to compete at the upcoming Summer Olympics in Tokyo, Japan, Coon will need to qualify the country by placing among the top two at the final Olympic Games Qualifier May 6-9 in Sofia, Bulgaria. Should Coon do that, he'll be the third Wolverine wrestling in Tokyo, joining current graduate students Stevan Micic (57 kg, representing Serbia) and Myles Amine (86 kg, representing San Marino), who have already punched their ticket with fifth-place finishes at the 2019 World Championships. Both Micic and Amine are the first-ever freestyle wrestlers to qualify for the Olympics from their respective countries, whom they're eligible to compete for thanks to their family heritage. Coon also isn't the only U-M heavyweight that qualified for the U.S. Senior National Team in Fort Worth — current junior Mason Parris (pictured below), the 2019 junior world champion, finished third at 125 kg in freestyle wrestling, earn- ing himself a spot on his first-ever senior-level national team. The only match Parris lost at the event was on criteria (meaning the score was tied at the end of regulation, and the last to score was declared the winner) and among those he topped in head-to-head action was former two-time NCAA champion Tony Nelson.
