26 CAVALIER CORNER VAF continues to host a variety of Zoom events to virtually connect alumni and donors with our sports' programs. There were kickoff events to wish good luck to our women's golf and men's la- crosse teams in their spring seasons, the Track'Ville Talk Series for track and field/cross country alumni and the local track commu- nity, several Swimming & Diving National Championship Zoom celebrations with alumni and donors, a football alumni conversa- tion with Coach Mendenhall, volleyball alumni discussions, and an exclusive virtual tour of the new Men's Basketball Performance Center led by Coach Bennett and Mike Curtis for the donors who supported the recently completed renovation. Exclusive events with Coach Bennett and Coach Mendenhall were held for donors to their sports' initiatives including the Master Plan, Sport Enhance- ment Funds, Endowment, Scholarship Society, Performance Cen- ter, and Locker Room. As event restrictions once again prevented us from hosting a VAF Spring Social Tour to bring coaches and student-athletes to donor areas, two large virtual events were streamed live on social media with a welcome by Dirk Katstra, VAF Executive Director; entertaining interviews by Dave Koehn, Voice of the Cavaliers; video highlights; graphics; and audience Q&A. "Cavalier Connec- tions: A Night with Virginia Football" featured The Fralin Family Head Football Coach Bronco Mendenhall; Joey Blount, football student-athlete; and Shawn Moore, football alumnus. "Cavalier Connections: A Night with Virginia Basketball" featured Dean and Markel Families Head Men's Basketball Coach Tony Bennett; Re- ece Beekman, men's basketball student-athlete; and London Per- rantes, men's basketball alumnus. Both events are still available to watch on the Virginia Cavaliers' Facebook account. While student-athlete thank-a-thons also cannot be held in person, virtual appreciation events with student-athletes and donors have begun with football leading the way. We look forward to creating more virtual opportunities throughout the year to engage donors and alumni with coaches, student-athletes, staff, and administration. & VAF news notables Spring Events Recap With the conclusion of the 2020-21 academic year, many of UVA's student-athletes will be entering the summer job market. The UVA Athletics Compliance Of- fice would like to remind our VAF members, in the event you hire a student-athlete for a paying job or as a paid/ unpaid intern, please be aware of the following NCAA and Athletics Compliance Office rules: • The student-athlete and the employer must complete the Student-Athlete Employment Form and return it to the Compliance Office prior to the start of his or her employment. Please direct the student-athlete to contact the Compliance Office to obtain the form. • The student-athlete must be compensated for work actually performed. • Although this seems straightforward, there have been NCAA major infractions at other schools where stu - dent-athletes were paid for fictitious/no-show jobs. • Compensation is paid commensurate with the going rate in the locality for similar services. • Increased compensation cannot be provided to the student-athlete for his or her reputation, fame, or personal following that they may have obtained be - cause of their athletic ability. • The employer and employee cannot publicize (or allow for publicity of) the student-athlete's name, im- age, or picture as an employee; or participate in any form of promotion for the employer (e.g., commer- cials, brochures, flyers, contests, etc.).
