4 CAVALIER CORNER Dear Cavalier Fan, During the past couple of months, it has been exciting to see some fans in the stands at our spring competitions and especially in Scott Sta- dium for the spring game. We are hopeful that conditions will continue to improve in the coming months so that we can welcome everyone back for the fall sports season. Our staff continues to work remotely and to connect with donors and fans virtually. We have enjoyed hosting several virtual events including a night with Virginia Football and a separate night with Virginia Men's Basketball. Additionally, we have been able to connect with alumni of many sports and we celebrated the women's swim and dive NCAA national championship. Please be on the lookout for other opportunities to engage with our coaches and student-athletes. At our May Foundation Board of Trustees meeting, I shared our fund- raising progress so far this year including the following highlights. Our Annual Fund continues to be vitally important to funding key priorities for the athletics department as it pays approximately 80% of the $22 mil- lion scholarship bill. Year to date we are trending slightly behind 2020 but ahead of 2019 with just over $13.3 million raised so far. We will continue to emphasize broad-based gifts of any size throughout the remainder of the year as we strive to meet our goal by December 31. The remainder of the scholarship bill is funded through endowed schol- arships and our fundraising progress in this category has been strong so far this year with over $2.2 million in new commitments. In May, we highlighted our 106 endowed scholarship recipients for 2021-22 on social media leading up to the Hoos Choice Awards recipients being featured through videos and graphics on social media as well. We were proud to honor and celebrate our student-athletes and hoped you enjoyed the online content throughout May. There are still opportunities to endow scholarships that qualify for University matching funds for those who are interested in creating this kind of legacy with Virginia Athletics. Work continues on the Athletics Master Plan, which was recently re- viewed by the University Board of Visitors. Details on the redesigned proj- ect will be available soon and we look forward to presenting opportunities for our donors to help complete this ambitious project. One of the most important features of this project is the football operations center that will replace the McCue Center, which opened in 1991, as the home of Virginia Football. Most athletics programs in the ACC and across the country have already completed similar projects. Thank you for your continued support of Virginia Athletics.
