14 THE WOLVERINE AUGUST 2021 INSIDE MICHIGAN ATHLETICS MICHIGAN'S TOP PERFORMERS Women's swimming and diving alum Catie DeLoof: The Grosse Pointe, Mich., native earned a bronze medal with Team USA in the Tokyo Olympics. Despite not competing in the 4x100-meter freestyle relay final, she was able to earn the medal due to her participation in the heats, when she helped Team USA reach the finals with her split of 53.42, the second-fastest time on the squad in the preliminaries. Softball alum Amanda Chidester: The starting left fielder deliv- ered a two-run, walk-off single in the bottom of the eighth inning to lift the United States to a 2-1 win over Australia July 25. The win improved Team USA to 4-0 to that point in opening-round play and clinched its berth in the gold-medal game. It was the second time in three games that Chidester knocked in the winning run. Men's basketball alum Moritz Wagner: A member of Germany's Olympic team, Wagner helped his squad reach To- kyo in the first place. Dur- ing the qualifiers in Croatia, he was named the tour- nament's Most Valuable Player after registering 14.3 points and 4.0 rebounds per game in his four contests. He shot 65.5 percent from the field and 40.0 percent from three-point range. The highlight of the tour- nament was Wagner's 28-point game (9 of 12 field goals, 3 of 6 from three) in the final against Brazil to punch Germany's ticket to the Olympic Games. Football junior wide receiver Ronnie Bell: Bell has been named to the preseason watch list for the Biletnikoff Award, which is presented each season to the most out- standing receiver in the nation. An All-Big Ten hon- orable mention honoree in 2019, Bell has led the Wol- verines in receiving yards each of the last two years. In 2020, he paced the club with 26 receptions for 401 yards and one touch- down, after posting 28 catches for 758 yards and one score in 2019. — Clayton Sayfie Wolverines Are Well-Represented In The Tokyo Olympics Twenty-nine athletes with ties to U-M (either as former or current ath- letes) are competing in the Summer Olympics in Tokyo, Japan, which began July 23.
