AUGUST 2021 THE WOLVERINE 53 PREP PROFILES Garland (Texas) Lakeview Centen- nial defensive end Trey Wilson made the trek all the way from the Lone Star State to Ann Arbor for a three- day unofficial visit in June. The four- star 2023 prospect enjoyed getting his first look at the Michigan program and came away impressed with what the Wolverines can offer, on and off the field. "Michigan was a really great trip," Wilson said. "I like the campus and the facilities. They told me a lot about what Michigan has to offer. They have the biggest stadium in the nation and the big- gest weight room in the country. "I was able to talk to ev- eryone on staff. I like how they are all returning to Michigan. That lets me know Coach [Jim] Harbaugh is serious about his staff and who's in his circle." A talented edge rusher, Wilson holds offers from Michigan, Arizona State, Arkansas, Baylor, Colorado, Minnesota, Oklahoma State, SMU, Utah and others. While it's still early in his recruit- ment, Michigan is definitely a strong contender. Both defensive coordina- tor Mike Macdonald and defensive analyst Ryan Osborn are making Wil- son a big priority for next cycle and sold him on scheme fit during their on-campus meetings. "Coach Oz is my boy," Wilson said. "I like him a lot. We talked about where I would fit in on the defense. I talked to Coach Macdonald about it, too, and they see me as a true edge rusher. That means rushing from the three, the six, the nine and being able to play in space. "When I think of Michi- gan, I think of big-time edge rushers that are able to establish dominance and be a menace in the Big Ten." The Lone Star State native said he could easily see himself playing at U-M. "I don't mind leaving Texas at all," Wilson said. "I loved it. We ate at the Brown Jug on my first night and Benny's on my last day. I liked that everyone knows that those are the places to eat on game days. The cam- pus is pretty. … "We also got to talk to [director of football administration] Claiborne Green. He told me about how seri- ous they take academics and how nobody has left Michigan without going to the NFL or getting a degree and an internship." Wilson is looking to make a return trip to Michigan at some point this fall. At 6-3, 230 pounds, he is rated as a 5.8 recruit. — EJ Holland Michigan hosted several top re- cruits in the 2023 class for unoffi- cial visits last month, including Luke Montgomery. The Rivals100 offen- sive lineman out of Findlay (Ohio) High got an in-depth look at the cam- pus and facilities and enjoyed his time in Ann Arbor. "It was awesome," Montgomery said. "The facilities are great. The coaches are great. I got to spend time with Coach [Sherrone] Moore and Coach [Grant] Newsome. They are both great. They gave me a whole tour of the campus and everything. It was a lot of fun." Montgomery, Rivals.com's No. 65 overall prospect nationally, initially notched an offer from Michigan in December, but a lot has changed since then. Michigan and former offensive line coach Ed Warinner parted ways, while Sherrone Moore took over the group after coaching tight ends. Moore has continued to make Montgomery an early priority and is making a strong push for him along with graduate assistant Grant Newsome, an ex-Michigan offensive lineman. Along with Moore and Newsome, Montgomery also had an opportunity to spend extended time with Michigan head coach Jim Harbaugh. "I love Coach Harbaugh," Mont- gomery said. "His dad, Mr. Jack, was there, too. My grandpa was there as well, so they talked to each other for a long time and had crazy stories to tell. With Coach Harbaugh, we talked a lot about family and some about football." Family is important to Montgom- ery, and Michigan is giving him the opportunity to team up with his younger brother, Ryan, at the next level. U-M became the first school to offer Ryan after seeing him throw live at its first on-campus camp. "That was awesome," Montgomery said. "I didn't really expect it. I was so excited for him. We've talked a little bit about playing with each other. It'll be nice if it works out, but I don't want my decision to have any impact on his choice. I want him to be happy and go where he wants to go." So where does Michigan stand coming out of last month's visit? "Michigan is up there," Montgom- ery said. "They've done a great job of recruiting me. Like I said, I'm going to head back up there a few more times. We'll see where it goes from there, but I was excited to talk to them and see everything in person. "They had stuff on the board about beating Ohio State. Michigan-Ohio State is the biggest rivalry.
