tracking the PACK Second Class Of NC State Athletic Hall Of Fame To Be Honored In November Groundbreaking coaches Norm Sloan and Earle Edwards are two of the most accomplished leaders in NC State athletics history. Sloan, a multiple-sport standout and an original recruit of legendary coach Everett Case during his days as a student at NC State, followed through on Case's promise to build NC State into a national basketball power, winning the school's first NCAA team title in any sport by guiding the 1974 squad to the men's basketball championship. Edwards took over a foundering football team in 1954 and built it into an ACC championship program, winning five league titles, earning four Coach of the Year honors and leading the Pack to its first ever postseason bowl victory. Their accomplishments earned the two Wolfpack favorites entry in the second class of the NC State Athletic Hall of Fame, which was announced in mid-May. The new class of 10 will be enshrined during a Nov. 22 ceremony at Reynolds Coliseum and recognized the next day at the NC State-East Carolina football game at CarterFinley Stadium. Tickets for the induction ceremony went on sale at www.GoPack.com on July 1. Joining Sloan, who died in 2004, and Edwards, who passed away in 1997, among the posthumous members of the Hall of Fame is late men's basketball forward Ronnie Shavlik, the Wolfpack's alltime leading rebounder and the ACC's first two-time All-American. Shavlik, who became a prominent Raleigh businessman and a vocal Wolfpack booster, died in 1983, shortly after the Wolfpack won the school's second NCAA championship. Tommy Burleson, the 7-2½-inch center on Sloan's 1974 national championship team, will join teammate David Thompson, the only basketball player among the 10 inductees in the first Hall of Fame class. ■ 2013 NC State Athletic Hall of Fame Inductees InducteeSport Tommy Burleson Men's basketball Mike Caldwell Baseball Earle Edwards Football coach Steve Gregg Men's swimming Torry Holt Football Philip Rivers* Football Ronnie Shavlik Men's basketball Norm Sloan Athlete/men's basketball coach Betty Springs Geiger Cross country Andrea Stinson Women's basketball Sylvester Terkay Wrestling * Was elected, but has deferred his induction until a later date Years 1971-74 1968-71 1954-70 1973-77 1995-98 2000-03 1954-56 1946-49/1966-80 1979-83 1989-91 1990-93 From top to bottom: hoops coach Norm Sloan, basketball player Tom Burleson, football coach Earle Edwards, basketball player Andrea Stinson, wrestler Sylvester Terkay, swimmer Steve Gregg and runner Betty Springs Geiger are among this year's 10 Hall of Fame inductees. However, since Rivers is still active in the NFL as the starting quarterback for the San Diego Chargers, he has deferred his induction until he will be able to attend the school's ceremony. Former ACC Baseball Player of the Year and Major League Baseball All-Star Mike Caldwell, a member of NC State's first College World Series team in 1968, was selected for the Hall, along with former NCAA champion swimmer Steve Gregg and wrestler Sylvester Terkay. Two women are part of the newest class, national champion distance runner Betty Springs and two-time All-American basketball player Andrea Stinson. The inaugural class of the NC State Athletic Hall of Fame, inducted last fall, included coaches Everett Case, Jim Valvano and Kay Yow; basketball star David Thompson; football players Roman Gabriel, Ted Brown and Jim Ritcher; distance runner Julie Shea Sutton; soccer star Tab Ramos; and women's basketball player Genia Beasley. — Tim Peeler 14 ■ the wolfpacker 14-16,18,20,22-23.Tracking The Pack.indd 14 7/2/13 12:14 PM
