DECEMBER 2021 THE WOLVERINE 55 BY ANTHONY BROOME MEN'S CROSS COUNTRY U-M captured runner-up honors at the Big Ten Cham- pionships Oct. 29 in State College, Pa., led by a pair of sec- ond-team All-Big Ten selections in graduate student Devin Meyrer and senior Tom Dodd. It was not enough to top 10th- ranked Wisconsin, which had seven All-Big Ten finishers. The Wolverines placed 25th out of 31 schools at the NCAA Championships Nov. 20 in Tallahassee, Fla., led by a 76th- place finish in the individual standings for junior Tom Brady. Graduate student Joost Plaetinck (122nd), sophomore Zach Stewart (130th), Meyrer (159th), sophomore Oli Raimond (208th), junior Nick Foster (246th) and fifth-year senior Christian Hubaker (249th) also competed at NCAAs. WOMEN'S CROSS COUNTRY The Wolverines finished fourth out of 14 schools in the Big Ten Championships Oct. 29 at State College, Pa. Junior Er- icka VanderLende led the way individually for Michigan, but finished as a runner-up in the six-kilometer (3.73-mile) race after being passed in the final seconds by Minnesota's Megan Hasz. She missed out on an individual title by 0.8 seconds and finished with a time of 20:35.3. She and senior Kayla Windemuller, who finished sixth, both earned first-team All-Big Ten honors for their efforts. Following a third-place finish (of 31 teams) at the NCAA Great Lakes Regional Nov. 12 in Evansville, Ind., Michigan's season came to a close at the NCAA Championships Nov. 20 in Tallahassee, Fla., with a 22nd-place finish out of 31 teams. FIELD HOCKEY (16-5 OVERALL, 5-3 BIG TEN) No. 2-ranked Michigan had its season come to an end in a 1-0 shootout loss to No. 12 Harvard in the quarterfinals of the NCAA Tournament Nov. 14 in Ann Arbor. The Crimson cashed in on its first three shootout attempts, while the Wolverines were unable to score. The Wolverines had defeated No. 25 Miami (Ohio) 3-2 in the first round to set up the showdown with Harvard. Michigan placed five players on the 2021 National Field Hockey Coaches Association Division I All-West Region teams, which is the fifth consecutive season that has happened. Fifth-year senior midfielder Halle O'Neill, senior mid- fielder Kathryn Peterson, senior forward Sofia Southam and sophomore defender Anouk Veen earned first-team honors, while junior midfielder Katie Anderson received second-team recognition. MEN'S SOCCER (8-7-3 OVERALL, 4-3-1 BIG TEN) The Wolverines' season came to an end Nov. 10 in State College, Pa., with a 2-0 loss to No. 24 Penn State in the semi- finals of the Big Ten Tournament. The Nittany Lions scored both of their goals in the first half, and Michigan was unable to mount a comeback. U-M had beaten Wisconsin 2-1 in the quarterfinals Nov. 7. Unfortunately, the final body of work was not enough for the Wolverines to hear their name get called during the NCAA Tournament selection show Nov. 15. WOMEN'S SOCCER (18-4-3 OVERALL, 6-2-2 BIG TEN) No. 9-ranked Michigan fell 1-0 in overtime to No. 1 Florida State in the quarterfinals of the NCAA Tournament Nov. 26 in Tallahassee, Fla., ending its 2021 campaign. The game was contested throughout and nearly went to a second overtime before the Seminoles scored with less than a minute to go in the first overtime. The Wolverines had defeated Bowling Green (2-0), Wake Forest (2-0) and No. 6 Tennessee (3-0) in Ann Arbor to reach the quarterfinals. The narrow defeat at the hands of FSU concluded a season during which U-M won its first Big Ten Tournament title in 20 seasons and notched its 300th victory as a varsity program. It also marked the fifth time in program history that the Wolver- ines won at least 17 matches in a single season. VOLLEYBALL (18-11 OVERALL, 11-9 BIG TEN) The Wolverines' season continued to roll along after they heard their name called on the NCAA Selection Show Nov. 28, earning the 20th bid in program history. U-M entered the postseason having won four of its last five contests and taking down Northwestern 3-1 Nov. 26 in Ann Arbor. Michigan was slated to face Mid-American Conference champion Ball State (29-3) Dec. 3 in Louisville, Ky., in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. The winner will play either Louisville or UIC in the second round Dec. 4. ❑   OLYMPIC SPORTS UPDATE Fall Teams Close Out 2021 Seasons Sophomore volleyball player Jess Mruzik won Big Ten Player of the Week honors Nov. 29 and is part of an NCAA Tournament team that faces Ball State Dec. 3.
