4 THE WOLVERINE APRIL 2022   FROM OUR READERS Some thoughts on the Michigan offense midway through spring ball … • The power running game will miss Hassan Haskins, one strong and formidable dude with the ball in his hands. Who will step up and claim that role, as both Blake Corum and Donovan Edwards are more the lightning in the Thunder and Lightning comparison? TampaBlue • Haskins will be missed no doubt, just those incredible yards after contact. Passing game should be even better, with a great influx of talent there plus Ron- nie Bell is back. I don't remember the last time there was this much potential and OL depth going into a season. Same could be said for special teams. If the defense steps up it's going to be quite the season. bluestud • Don't forget about Luke Schoonmaker. He'll be playing on Sundays. We have an incredible 1-2 punch at the tight end position. 92Wolv • We can win the first 11 games, definitely. I think our only chance against Ohio State any year going forward, however, is the exact formula we used last year. Power running and crazy good pass rush. We can't beat them trying to go toe to toe in the passing game, "speed in space." I think Haskins and the now NFL-bound defensive ends will be missed beyond belief in that game. mr.michigan • I think Jim Harbaugh and company know both that they have weapons, and they will need to put up some big numbers when the D isn't getting it done. The D needs time to develop. Hopefully they will do so, and by the time we go to Columbus we are playing very, very good football. Crazy to think it's been since 2001 that we beat those gentlemen in the 'Shoe. Let me tell you, Tom Brady would surely second that! That was during my third year at the Michigan Medical School. Let me describe the setting. Michigan had not been getting great athletes in their recruiting. My first year, we had lost all but two games. The next year we won three. But the following year all sorts of good things happened. Jim Detwiler and Carl Ward were two thundering halfbacks. Mel Anthony at fullback was something special. Jim Conley captained that team and was a great end. Then there was Timberlake. He was a class act. In our only loss of the season, when a Bob Griese-led Purdue team beat us by one, Bob T. ran an option from scrimmage where he scored from 40-plus yards out. The beer-guzzled frat house behind me at the stadium did not know what to say. The "preacher" did it, and he did it with his legs and great attitude. The judgment day game was down in Columbus. One of my med school buddies, who still worked for The Daily News, got my other buddy and me sideline passes. We were behind the bench of Ohio State, led by Woody Hayes and staff, and we had to kneel down on most plays and freeze our kneecaps in the sub-freezing temperature. We won that game, 10-0, and almost got punched by Woody in the process. Did I know Bob. T? I did meet him once, at the Michigan intramural pool, and he was what you might expect him to be. He broke into a broad grin and shouted what I kind of expected. "GO BLUE!" he said. I replied "GO BLUE!" He did not have today's stats. But you're right in calling him "GOAT."
