APRIL 2022 THE WOLVERINE 63 BY CLAYTON SAYFIE F ormer NBA superstar Michael Jor- dan faxed out a press release on March 18, 1995, that simply read, "I'm back," announcing his return to the sport after a one-year hiatus. The news sent shockwaves through- out the sports community, just like quarterback Tom Brady's March 13, 2022 tweet announcing he'd be returning to the NFL's Tampa Bay Buccaneers for his 23rd professional season after 40 days of retirement. "These past two months, I've realized my place is still on the field and not in the stands," Brady posted. "That time will come. But it's not now. I love my teammates, and I love my supportive family. They make it all possible. I'm coming back …" The seven-time Super Bowl cham- pion added that he has "unfinished business." Brady's announcement came on the eve of the start of free agency, giving notice to the Buccaneers organization and players who were considering either staying or leaving so that they can best make decisions and build a champion- ship-caliber roster. Despite calling it quits for a brief pe- riod of time, Brady actually enjoyed one of the best statistical seasons of his ca- reer in 2021, leading the NFL in pass- ing yards (5,316) and touchdown throws (43), while finishing second in MVP voting and being named second-team All-Pro. The Buccaneers' roster won't look exactly the same as it did a year ago, but they'll bring back Pro Bowl center Ryan Jensen; wide receiver Chris God- win, who was franchise tagged; wide- out Mike Evans, who is under contract through 2023; and others to an offense that ranked second in the league in both total yards and points per game last sea- son. With the most important piece of- ficially back, Tampa Bay is expected to contend for another Super Bowl, with the team having the fourth-best odds (+850) to win a world title, according to DraftKings Sportsbook.
