58 THE WOLVERINE JUNE / JULY 2022   OLYMPIC SPORTS Baseball Michigan fell into a tailspin late in the regular season, drop- ping nine of 12 contests as of May 15. First-place Maryland (41-10) hosted Michigan from May 13-15 and swept all three games, dropping the Wolverines to 25-24 on the season. U-M returns home for a one-off game with Michigan State May 17 before closing out the regular season in Ann Arbor in a three-game series against Rutgers May 19-21. Men's Golf Graduate student Brandon O'Reilly tied for sixth with a 3-over-par 219 during the Big Ten Championships April 29- May 1 in French Lick, Ind. Michigan finished in 13th place. Freshman Hunter Thomson's final-round 1-over 73 tied him for 27th in his first Big Ten Championships. The Wolverines totaled 919 during the event and finished seven strokes behind Ohio State. Nebraska finished 14th with a 944 total. Illinois won the Big Ten title with an 885 total over three days. Women's Golf Following its Big Ten Championship victory, U-M hosted the NCAA's Ann Arbor Regional from May 9-11. A final-round 287 helped the 18th-ranked Wolverines to an 880 total and a third-place tie, which helped them advance to the NCAA Finals. It is the second straight trip to the finals and fifth in program history, all coming under head coach Jan Dowling. In the regional, Michigan was led by a trio of top-25 fin- ishes from senior Ashley Lau (T-5th), junior Hailey Borja (T- 9th) and junior Mikaela Shulz (T-23rd). The NCAA Finals are set for May 20-25 in Scottsdale, Ariz. Men's Lacrosse Junior Josh Zawada became U-M's all-time leading scorer with four points (three goals, one assist) in a season-ending 16-10 loss to 10th-ranked Ohio State in the quarterfinals of the Big Ten Tournament. Zawada totaled 148 points (83 goals, 65 assists) during his career and finished with 43 goals this season. The defeat ended the Wolverines' season and dropped their final record to 7-8. Women's Lacrosse U-M was able to notch a 17-11 NCAA Tournament win over 16th-ranked Notre Dame May 13, sending the Wolverines to the second round for only the second time in program history. Their season came to an end against No. 6 Northwestern May 15 with a 15-12 loss. U-M freshman Jill Smith scored a career-high four goals in the loss, which ended the season with an 11-7 overall record. Rowing The sixth-ranked Wolverines earned a second-place finish in the Big Ten Championship that took place May 15 at Eagle Creek Reservoir in Indianapolis. The U-M women's effort was headlined by collecting gold medals in the second varsity eight and third varsity four events. A photo finish in the first varsity eight event saw Ohio State barely edge ahead and kept U-M in second place. Next up is the NCAA Champion- ship from May 27-29 in Sarasota, Fla. Softball Michigan finished the regular season 36-16 after falling 3-1 to Nebraska in extra innings May 14 in the Big Ten Tourna- ment championship game. Despite that, U-M is still adding to the program's track record of success. The Wolverines are headed to the NCAA Tournament for the 27th consecutive season (29th overall appearance), where they will participate in the Orlando Regional and open against South Dakota State May 20. The regional plays out as a four-team, double-elimination tournament over three days. Other teams in the regional include host school UCF and Vil- lanova. The winner will play a three-game series against the winner of the Norman (Okla.) Regional May 26-28. Michigan is 86-21 all time in NCAA regionals and has won 18 regional titles. This is just the eighth time in program his- tory that they will play a regional on the road. Men's Tennis The No. 5-seeded Wolverines defeated No. 12 Texas 4-2 in an NCAA Tournament Super Regional match May 14, send- ing the men to their first Elite Eight appearance since 1998. Michigan held a 3-2 lead with No. 1 and No. 3 singles left to play before lightning in the area forced a pause. The ac- tion resumed an hour later indoors, where the Wolverines finished off the victory. The win sets up an NCAA showdown with a familiar foe in Ohio State. The match is set for May 19 in Champaign, Ill. Women's Tennis The team portion of No. 18 Michigan's season came to an end May 7 after a 4-0 loss to defending national champion Texas at the Texas Tennis Center. The Wolverines' season ended with 20 victories — the 12th time that has happened in program history — and a Big Ten championship. U-M will be represented by sophomore Kari Miller in the NCAA Singles Championship, which is set for May 23-28 at the University of Illinois. Her draw will be determined at a later date. Men's Track & Field Junior Josh Zeller's first-place finish in the 110-meter hur- dles helped the Wolverines to a sixth-place showing at the Big Ten Outdoor Championships on May 15, held at Minne- sota. Zeller's time of 13.19 seconds set a conference record. Senior Cole Johnson (silver) and freshman Miles Brown (bronze) medaled in the 800-meter final. Sophomore Dubem Amine finished second in the 400 meters, and senior Cassidy Henshaw took third in the high jump. Women's Track & Field Senior Aurora Rynda's 800-meter conference title defense and sophomore Ziyah Holman's second-place finish in the 400 meters helped U-M finish seventh overall in the Big Ten Outdoor Championships. Sophomore Aasia Laurencin finished fourth in the 100-me- ter hurdles to aid in the efforts. Qualifying individuals from both the U-M men's and wom- en's teams will participate in the NCAA East Preliminaries on May 25-28 at Indiana. — Anthony Broome Maize & Blue Highlights
