BLUEGOLDONLINE.COM JUNE/JULY 2022 21 back room devoid of seniors or graduate students, the Irish need a new leader in that arena as well. "I've talked to people about that a lot, actually," Tyree said. "I've grown a lot, just being that I am the older guy in the room. I talk to Coach [Matt] Balis about that all the time, how there's just a whole bunch of babies with me in the room, and I've got to be the guy that takes the lead, ensures accountability and makes sure everybody's straight." While Tyree stopped short of say- ing being a vocal leader was difficult for him, he was pushed a bit by the coaching staff. He feels he is in a better position to assume that role than he was in past years. "This winter and spring I've been really pushed to be a leader, and that is not just being a leader by ex- ample," Tyree said. "I have to be more vocal and tell people what they need to hear." The junior added the fact that the team is close-knit allows him to step outside of his comfort zone and add commentary he might be otherwise a bit worried to vocalize. "When we're talking to each other," he noted, "we understand that what- ever is said needs to be said." TURNING THE PAGE As Tyree enters his junior sea- son, he is on a mission. It helps that he has all of the confidence of his position coach. "Tyree is a super-fast, smart guy and leader in the room," Mc- Cullough said. "He can do all the things you need in space and is tough enough to run up inside." The injuries are somewhat up to fate, but Tyree is doing ev- erything in his power to take the field and replace the narrative that he isn't up to the task that his recruiting ranking once sug- gested. The skill set is there, it's just a matter of staying healthy. "I'm all healed up now," Tyree said. "I'm ready to go." ✦ Tyree compiled 1,041 total yards and 6 touchdowns from scrimmage in his first two years in South Bend, but his pro- duction during his sophomore year was hindered by a turf toe injury.
